Through the tag system you can do whatever you wish.

No... there is no way to add new genres. What most people do is create tags for the missing genres they like.

I am aware of the tag system, but it would just be nice if it could be posible to do it the "genres" way. It is posible with the studios, so i think it would be great in a more directly way, and not the "tag way".
I hope the developers would look at this at a positive suggestion to this great programe.

The problem with that is that genres, unlike studios, are very much an issue of personal interpretation and that a user-driven expansion of the current list would very soon result in lack of transparency of the overall range of genres. Moreover, it would result in a flood of profile contributions adding genres or replacing genres.

What I would favour personally is that Genres would become a local, personal field, much like e.g. Sort Title.

Kim:

The difference between Studios and Genre, is that Studios is based on FACTUAL data that can be derived directly from the disc. Genres on the other hand are NOT factual, they are completely and totally subjective, and are determined ONLY by the eyes of the user, which is also why the Rules discourage Genre changes in the Online once full up. One man's hamburger is another's steak, as it were.

I agree with you to a point, dejay, but I also think some form of genre is important data of a sort for the Online, thus I am happy with what we have and I have for years now, used the Tags for any additional Genre information I feel is important to ME.

@ Skip:
I can live with it as well, Skip. The only genre I'm really missing in the current range is something like "Detective" or "Crime" (at present, I tend to use "Suspense/Thriller" for these, but it doesn't feel quite right).

BTW, would it surprise you the nickname "Tag Man" comes to my mind while reading many of your posts?

LOL, deejay. That is probably because Idon't feel it necessary to impose my data on anyone else. I want the Rules followed for the Online and my data is my data, of what relevance is it to you for example that I might consider Star Trek IV a Comedy  (an old inside joke, we actually had a user trying to argue that once upon a time...not me).

Really? What a laugh!
But I reckon that after an evening full of superstrong Belgian beers a lot of movies would look like comedies to me...

FWIW I agree we should add a "Crime" genre... the other one I would like to see is Superhero for stuff like X-Men as people disagree whether they are Fantasy or Sci-Fi and usually people end up using both as a sort of Superhero genre shorthand.

Or at least add the genre Mystery..
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

LOL, this illustrates my point, we could go on and on ad infintim on this we all ahve our ideas on what we would like to sse. Dramedy, Romantic Comedy, whatever pick your poison. My position is simple because I realize that this could snowball into a near unmangeable list of Gnres, whose reall only function will result in people ping-ponging Genre Contributions, which we have enough of already, with re-ordering nonsense and so forth. So I am quite happy with whatever Ken gives us, and if i need anything else... Tag it.

I don't know about you, but i don't want to see a Genre list of a hundred or more possibilities, which could be done quite easily..

Don't get upset, but I see the same thing in Languages (although that at least is not subjective) but everybody wants their language of choice in the list. I want Serbian, even though there are only 10 films (hypothetical) that use it and one user who wants it. Although I do like the idea of being able to check Other and then define Other.

Languages, like CoO's, are a different story, IMHO. Like you said, they're not subjective. The issue there is more one of how to keep it workable. A suggestion I have made elsewhere for CoO's is to do this through a list of checkboxes as in Subtitles (at the same time resolving the issue of multinational coproductions). This could work for languages as well.

I can understand it's not a pressing issue for you, but with a collection like mine, with 35+ CoO's and as you can imagine quite a few languages as well, you DO run into trouble sometimes.

For really "small" languages and CoO's, I agree with checking Other and then defining it.
