Ken

I know many people have expressed their dissatisfaction with the Birth Year process.

Is there any other alternative this method?

I have just started a thread for 'Paul Williams' according to IMDB (sorry to mention them!!) there are over 37 people with this name.
We're never going to find BYs for all of them.

Definitely agree as well. More so now that we only put military ranks and the like in Credited As.

Yup... that is another change to the rules I just didn't understand... and made us depend more on Birth Years that we can't find in the first place!

The problem if we have a possibility to distinguish different cast or crew members with same name: We always have to check which one we add and this can get the same problem as we now have with Birth Years.

How can I say it's the "Paul Williams (No.1)"? ...

It would be a nice feature, but can cause a can of worms.

Virus:

This is a problem caused by and large by ken because he allows for sloppy or little documentation. Right now we have a user adding a BY to a Profile, and offers the BY thread for support of the year, but offers NOTHING to support that is Actor with the given BY, instead of one of the other possibilities. That's wrong, but he has yes votes. The BY thread cannot provide documentation in this particular regard, if you think it is Actor (1905) then provide something that backs that up, I accept the thread for verification of the BY BUT...

It has been suggested that we could use arabic numbering for multiple actors, but how does that number get assigned (not by users I hope) and then how does it get managed. This could be an even worse can of worms given the sloppy state of affairs in the world of doc and verification, we have too many users who will not because they don't have to...they don't stop and think or CARE that perhaps they could communicate better or SHOULD go out and provide some verification, it's just i don't have to so I won't.

I've been trying to think of something since the new rules came into effect and so far I've been unable to come up with anything that would be functional and relatively easy to use.

Of course you're not wrong. But for actors for which we can find Birth Years, we have good chances to find also the movies they played in.

But how will you document for the very less known actors, that the actor you contribute is the actor that also played in Movie XY?! How will you make the correct linking?

The work on the database will getting harder and harder. I wouldn't call it very user-friendly.

There are akways two sides of a medal.

What helps a perfect database with no one that fills it up with life?

You always have the possibility to distinguish the actors, you want to have separate, by fictional Birth Years. And if we would think about it we would also find a way to share this distinguishing. But for main database I don't think it can be done.

There are too much possibilities. And not evfery one is interested to know if the actor that plays "the man sleeping in church" in Movie X is the same as "the man in third row of the concert" in Movie Y.

The only thing that comes in mind that could help is distinguishing actors and crew with a actor database, that show up every actor with every movie he played in in database and with every credited as, ...

For example:
First entry: Actor "John": played in movie y, movie z, ...
Second entry: Actor "John" played in movie v, movie x, ...

So no numbers and other things (these could stay unshown and without interest of the user), just a list of credits the actor has.

But the problems stay.

Oh I understand and agree. Bu, by the same token, as I pointed out somewhere who really cares about a faceless Mary Smith who might have appeared in 3 or 4 films. Alien allowed as to how he cared about such people, I take him at his word, but i would also say that if he REALLY does care then he could put a face to Mary Smith, if not a BY, so that we could make the proper association. But as just a faceless name, there is nothing to associate to, no BY...who cares about that linkless name. Yes, yes I know Mary Smith is a very common name and there are hundreds of them...it's a hypothetical.

Face is good. And for local you can do very much and sharing would also work, but I still say for online this doesn't work.

Headshots in online will always be fights which is the best pic or on which the actor looks as he is known, ....

So offline, local and for sharing between users there we could find a way, but for the online database we need something different that none of us can imagine yet.  (But I'm always open for good ideas)

I, too, big time agree with the overhaul suggestion.

I don't know what would work best, but this:

Quote:

Is a good place to start.

And using some kind of numbering system behind the name (John Smith, John Smith [1], John Smith [2]) would be better than what we have now.

IMO, it would take just as much work for verification purposes as the Birth Year, no doubt, but would be infinitely better when it comes to linking, at the end of the day.

In some cases that would be VERY helpful, leo.
