Good evening, Sirs,

is the Carter in John Carter Cash, son of Johnny Cash and June Carter, a second first name, middle name, or first last name?

Love, bbbbbb

Judging by how I read the bio on his official website it is a second first name.

http://www.johncartercash.com/page8/page8.html

So I would parse him John Carter / / Cash

Now this came quite unexpected.
I think it's better for me to stop contributing for movies that have American names involved. One can never be sure about the correct parsing. Heck, in this case I would have risked my right arm to say this is parsed John / / Carter Cash, or possibly even John / Carter / Cash.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I have any number of cousins, aunts and uncles who are always referred to by their first and middle names.

Likely it is the same for Cash, to easily distinguish him from his father.

It's John / Carter / Cash.

I agree with tweeter.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Really?  Even given that in the bio on his own website he refers to himself as John Carter?  Consistently?

Quote:
"Since 1993, John Carter has worked as a music producer"
"John Carter's first CD, Bitter Harvest was released in 2003"
"All in all John Carter has been a producer on five “Grammy” award winning recording projects"

also, from the page on "the cabin"

Quote:
The studio is now owned and operated by John Carter Cash. It sits on forty-acres of woods and fields. John Carter raises European Fallow Deer on the property. There is also a large fishing pond stocked with Large-Mouth Bass, Bream, and Catfish."

If my cousins had websites they'd be referred to by their first & middle names: Eddie Joe, Billy Ray, etc.  Ditto my uncles and aunts.

The fact that multiple names are used regularly doesn't change their default parsing.

If only there actually was something like "default parsing". Unfortunately, there isn't.

...the default parsing...

Fortunately, we do not have default parsing. Any general rule about names cannot avoid to introduce errors, and wrong data is the worst thing when we speak of database functions (sorting, filtering, linking...). People who ask for such default rules generally prefer lazyness to correct documented data.

Luckily there is no default parsing. Otherwise we would be counting words which doesn't make any sense when parsing a name into fields which have their own meaning.

That would make sense, if we actually did that. But no, we don't do that either. Asian names, anyone?

Nothing automatic will never make sense. When we see the result of the calamitous automatic rule about accents, creating variants and unlinking for thousands of actors' names (for whom no variant exist in credits), no sane user can hope another thing like that.

I never claimed that it would. I'm just saying that what we're doing now - which is: anything goes - doesn't make sense either.

As others have said before, there is no default parsing.  Given that he continually uses both his names, that to me speaks a double first name, rather than anything else.

There's a contact form on the website, someone could contact him and see if he answers as to how he would like his name parsed.  Or if he cares.

If we are to have a default parsing, that needs to be added to the rules.  But, like surfeur, I think that would be terrible.
