What we want is for the rating to reflect what was purchased.  If I buy Doomsday: Unrated, and it has the theatrical version included as a bonus, I don't want the rating to be 'R'.  I want it to be 'NR' because that is what I purchased.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

But that is not the rule that the majority wants... what we want is

If the DVD Release has Not Rated / Unrated version on the cover (Even if there is a rated version as well) Mark it as NR (Unrated if/when we get that).

"On the cover" is no part of the proposed rule.  This is what I was trying to explain earlier.  I believe we need to make sure this applies only to those profiles with "Unrated" or similar on the cover.  If not, northbloke is correct, we will be affecting a very large number of rated titles.

I am not sure where you are getting this number but, roughly 17% of my unrated DVDs include the rated version.

It's a fraction of 1% of the entire database, based on a random sampling.  The "percentage of unrated" is an unrelated number.

Ok, so current rule is:

Quote:
Use the Rating shown on the DVD cover. When there is no rating indicated or no rated version of the film on the disc, use the NR rating.

What you're proposing is we need to add an exception, something like?

Quote:
Exception: if the DVD cover advertises itself as an "Unrated", "Extreme" etc. edition, use NR even if a rated version is also available on the DVD.

Does this cover all bases?

Your exception was negating the second line of the rules... so I believe what I put above would work better.

?Edit: I just reread what you said... the actual rule now says to use the rated version not nr.

You see, I think that's still too vague. Some people could twist that to say that advertising an extended director's cut on the cover is an unrated version, and we don't want those affected.

I ma getting more and more the opinion that we either do not understand each other or that we are talking about two totally different things here.

I think this thread and this poll is about how to deal with disks that have two versions of the same film, an UNRATED and a RATED one.

It does absolutely not matter if the cover says Unrated Edition Special Edition, Director's Cut or whatsoever.

It is plain and simple about that the vast majority here (if I look at the postings and the poll result) wants to enter Unrated / Not rated for a disk that contains a rated version as well.

And that is exactly what we have been doing since this program existed.
Who anyways came up with the idea to change this and why ?

It is clearly obvious as the Martian said, that people buy those editions for the longer / not censored / unrated / not rated version and not for the other version that is on that disk (can be R-rated / PG rated or anything else)

So why would anyone want to enter PG / R-Rated / PG-13 or something like this, if there is also an UNRATED / NOT RATED version on the disk ???

This really slips my mind.

huh? please explain? if it is advertising an unrated version of the movie.... then that is what we want. If the extended directors cut is unrated then we want unrated in the field. I don't remember ever seeing a case where there is an unrated version and it not saying Unrated somewhere on the case. If it doesn't say it is unrated then we want whatever the rating is.

I said if the cover shows both a rated and unrated version... I really don't know how much simpler to put it. If it says it is unrated anywhere on the cover then we use NR/Unrated... if not we don't

Ok Donnie, using my X-Men example.

It's a PG-13 film (as noted on the back of the cover), however there is an option to play the film with deleted scenes added via branching. This version of the film is technically unrated, it was never submitted to the MPAA. It's not advertised as Unrated, it's not advertised as a Director's Cut. What rating would you give the profile?

That would get PG-13... and would be covered by my rule...

Use the Rating shown on the DVD cover. If the cover shows both a rated and unrated version of the movie use NR (Unrated if/when we get that).

See what I put in bold. If the cover does not show Unrated/Not Rated... then we use the rating.

Lets see if I can try again to make it how we are wanting it...

Use the Rating shown on the DVD cover. If the cover has a rating, but also says there is an unrated version anywhere on the case, use NR (Unrated if/when we get that).

No, I think that's worse. I preferred your original wording, I'm just trying to look through some profiles to make sure there's no way to twist the wording.

Edit: see below

I prefer the original what I worded it too. I was just trying to put it as plain and simple top understand as possible.

I noticed you posted as I was editing, so I'll repeat as a new post:

The problem I'm having is that very often on the back you'll have the phrase "special features not rated" or something similar. I'm trying to work out whether your wording could be interpreted to include that phrase as "showing an unrated version".

Edit: that's why in my wording I used the word "advertised" rather than "showed" - it indicates that the wording needs to be prominent on the cover.

The problem with that is it may just be a simple rating icon... it could have say a PG-13 icon and next to it an NR icon. One icon per version of the movie. In such cases we still want the Unrated to be used.
