Special Features Not Rated wouldn't come into it as my rule shows...

Use the Rating shown on the DVD cover. If the cover shows both a rated and unrated version of the movie use NR (Unrated if/when we get that).

see bold... says in the rule... unrated version of the movie. So how would "Special Features Not Rated" matter?

Well the cover shows (for example):

Special Features: Director's Cut available via branching

and the cover also shows:

Special Features Not Rated

So the Director's Cut is shown as a Special Feature, and the Special Features are shown to be Not Rated. Therefore the Director's Cut is Not Rated.

I know it's not what you intended the rule to say, but that's what I'm saying - it can be twisted to say that. The phrase "the cover shows.. .. [an] unrated version of the movie" I think is too vague for the rule.

Ok, I just saw your previous post and I have an idea.

How about:

Use the Rating shown on the DVD cover, or NR is there is none. If the cover contains both a rated and unrated LOGO use NR.

Edit: no, that won't work either as some films don't use the logo but the words "Not Rated".

Edit 2: Ok, how about a combination...

Use the Rating shown on the DVD cover. If the cover contains both a rated and unrated LOGO or if the DVD cover advertises itself as an "Unrated", "Extreme" etc. edition, use NR. If there is no rating on the DVD, use NR.

Can't use logo.. as just a banner or wording that there is an Unrated Version nay be on the cover It may also just say something liked Includes Unrated Version.

Just seen your edit... and yup.

What Pete is describing has been the way it has been done for the last five years, north. And frankly, I have seldom if ever seen ANY form of controversy with it. It's easy from a data entry viewpoint and it has NO conditionals.

I never seen any problem as he describes either. but figured if we can make it so it is clearer then for people fine. But it does seem to be a bit of a non-issue. at least from all my experience.

Ok, maybe we're looking to cover too many bases at once. Maybe we're just not going to get a rule that covers all options.

What if we look at it from another angle:

Use the Rating shown on the DVD cover. If the cover shows both a rated and unrated version of the movie use the rating relevant to the main feature.

So your "Unrated", "Extreme" editions etc. would be covered. Those that include extended (but not necessarily more extreme) cuts as bonuses should also be covered. The only loss would be when you have a specifically "extreme" cut as a bonus feature - that would have to get the rating of the main feature.

Neither have I. But the point is Ken has, and he's the one who changed the rule. If you want him to change it back, you have to make sure the loophole he has seen is closed.

"Rating relevant to the main feature" don't really work either... as you can see times where one isn't more relevant then the other. Sometimes you can see just rated and unrated versions of the film. If you see the sentence "Rated and unrated Versions/Editions both included" Or "Includes both Rated and Unrated Versions/Editions" which is relevant? How do you know which is the main feature? But it has both and we would want to track the unrated in the field.

Now you are setting up arguments over what is the MAIN feature. And don't try and tell me there won't be, these people will argue over the color of the sky.

Even simple as Pete has spelled out. Like I said it is simple, easy and more important than anything...no conditionals.

I really think what I said earlier covers it...

If you don't think people will twist that to start removing ratings en masse, and Ken agrees with you, it's fine by me!

Edit: we'll still need the line "When there is no rating indicated or no rated version of the film on the disc, use the NR rating." to cover those titles that aren't rated at all.

That is essentially what we have been doing for FIVE years, and it has never caused a problem, not one that I can ever recall seeing. Once in  awhile a newbie will ask and one of us will explain it and it's done. But it has never been an issue, until Ken made this change. The old saying works; If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Just to make sure everyone is on the same page, if the cover shows a rating and doesn't indicate an unrated version is included, this rule says to use the rating shown on the cover, even if there is an unrated version on the disc.

Fine by me, but I want to make sure there is no confusion.

It was broken. It did not cover this condition. I'm not sure how much more clearly I can state this.  If you honestly believe I invent rule changes due to lack of things to do, I have a bridge to sell you.
