I admit that I haven't read all 18 pages of this thread, so maybe this has been brought up and shot down, but to me this seems to make sense:

Unrated
Any movie without a rating that has a rated version counterpart. This covers alternate cuts, director's cuts, ultimate cuts, whatever.

Not Rated
Any movie that has never received an official rating on any version. Be it because it was released prior to 1968 (in the U.S.) or because it's a direct-to-video movie or whatever. As long as a rating has never been publicized for any version of the movie, it'd be Not Rated.

---

From where I'm sitting it's that simple. I'm probably overlooking something though.

It is, indeed, that simple.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.

No, it's not, martian. i wish that it were, but it simply is not. Let's take for example an Unrated Edition, but the back has competing data, an MPAA rating AND aniother rating that say NOT RATED. Now you have features of both definitions involved, this is why i don't believe it is a good idea to try and pigeon hole this. If I have learned anything the last five years, it is don't try for narrow definitions, it never works.

I think the main category still unsettled is that of the example northbloke gave:
Quote:
When X-Men first came out on DVD, it included deleted scenes that, via a branching option, could be put back into the film. The theatrical version is PG-13, the longer version is, technically, unrated.

A DVD not advertised as "Unrated", with a normal rating on the cover, but which through one method or another allows the viewing of an alternate version of the main feature that may not be rated.

Special features, which this would be, are not rated here in the states.  Because of that, this is a non-issue for me.

That being said, if the rule is worded, similar to how I worded it, it should be clear that we are talking about the main feature and not bonus materials.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.

Clearly you and I are seeing this differently because, to me, it really is as simple as this:

"Use the Rating shown on the DVD cover.
Exceptions: Use "Unrated" for any release that includes, or is, an unrated/not rated version of a rated film.  Use "NR" for any release without a rating."
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.

Martian, have you learned nothing from the people of this forum. I can guarantee you that this WILL cause confusion, in massive quantities, because it is not as simple as you believe. You are trying to apply to definitions using two terms Unrated and Not rated, but the you absolutely have instance where those terms are both incorporated into a single product, this is exactly the sort of thing I have seen cause confusion here time and time again.

I have yet to see both terms used on a single product.  Unrated and a rating, yes.  Not rated and a rating, again, yes.  Unrated and Not Rated, not that I can remember.  Do you have an example of this?

How about The chronicles Of Riddick: Pitch Black; Unrated Edition, with both MPAA R and NOT RATED on the back and there are MANY, MANY more.

The suggested exception covers that:

Quote:
"Use the Rating shown on the DVD cover.
Exceptions: Use "Unrated" for any release that includes, or is, an unrated/not rated version of a rated film.  Use "NR" for any release without a rating."

Both of those were rated originally, thus they would fall into the "unrated" category.

Clearly you did not read what I wrote as I said, "Unrated and a rating, yes.  Not rated and a rating, again, yes."  Most, if not all, unrated releases, that include the theatrical version, have the MPAA rating as well as Unrated/Not Rated.  That has always been the case.  Under the old rule, we always listed these as 'NR'.  Under my proposed rule, they would be listed under 'Unrated'...assuming we get that feature...so I don't see how this is so difficult.

Oh goody, Exceptions MORE confusion. Exceptions and condityionals are very bad things. This can be done without EITHER.

I was just showing both could fall under the 'Unrated' category with the suggested exception. Nothing more.

I think you are misunderstanding me.  I was talking about the ratings area.  Yes, some will have 'Unrated' as the edition, then 'Not Rated' as the rating, but they won't have 'Unrated' and 'Not Rated' as the rating.

So you are saying it is to confusing for you to put "Unrated" if the film has been rated before?
