Haha, McAfee site adviser comments on http://www.flixster.com/...

"It does not tell you what is happening and asks you for sensitive information. It then sends an email to all of your contacts with out you knowing. It is a privacy invasion!"

and...

I'm not paying full price for one feature that used to be free, I'd rather go to alternative software or build my own personal database that can output the data to the web.

Let me see if I understand this correctly.  You want the owners to give you something for nothing.  And if they refuse, you're going to take you business elsewhere and give someone else your nothing?

I'm not really seeing any incentive for them to change their policy here.

If you're able to buy and collect more than 50 DVDs (lets say with an average cost of 15 bucks > 750), you should have the 30 for this great litte piece of software.

PS: Feel free to try out those called dvd online databases...sooner or later you will see that DVDP is the best of its kind.

Exactly, it's not that $30 is a of lot money for an unlimited period. I pay more for my internet connection each month.

Better say, there is not much free Software which has the Quality of DVDP. ( maybe some other Tools which must be paid...but who know? )
I have searched for myself a free tool, but none of them was good....or better said, they are not good when you have used DVDP before.

Let's talk about the things other software can -
on flixster the have ratings divided for all, male and female or only my friends -
this would be a good feature for dvdprofiler too.
Another nice feature on flixster: the community aspect - here we only have our forum -
and -sadly- all online critics are without text ....

Or let's discuss a "light membership" - where you can use big collections but no hi-res scan for maybe 10.-/15.-$

I agree with "Thou shalt not stall travellers." - but these travellers and there friends won't come back ...

One of the main advantages of the paid for registration is the no limit size collections.
If you gave this away for less then some who might have purchased the full registration might go for the lite version.

But its unlikely you would get a free loader who would pay for a lite membership - they want everything for nothing.

IIRC Profiler never had a true 'free' version until 3.0 - back as IVS it was more of a sponsored mode as there were ads within the program and online which couldn't be properly disabled w/o a premium key.
I suppose this was removed from 3.x either because Ken & Geri didn't like that route for some reason, or perhaps the supporting code was owned by one of the other IVS members and wasn't included in the deal (I recall Ken Meade seemed responsible for the upkeep of the Price Search element, perhaps it was related to that module.) Or maybe ads & click-through commisson never generated enough revenue to warrant the administrative work.

A "light" features pricing is an interesting idea, though I wonder if it's overcomplicating things here... after all, this isn't a recurring cost like a subscription, or has additional fees for upgrade revs (as many vendors require.)  A one time of $30USD doesn't seem that much for such a product, IMO.  Though if it could be shown that there was enough interest in a 'Light' version, maybe Ken's interest might be piqued to develop it - since the free version as currently exists generates no cash or database improvement.
