I agree, if the reason he's got no UPC is he has thrown it away they should not be contributed to the main database by disc-id. Disc-ID profiles are meant for releases that have no UPC, not for duplicating every single profile.

There would be no duplication as the titles do not exist in the database.

That's nonsense. It doesn't matter if they already exist or not, the fact remains that this dvd HAS a UPC/EAN and should only be added to the online database with it and not by disc-id. It's completely irrelevant if someone has already done that or if it'll take another few weeks/months until someone does. If you allow disc-id profiles (online, locally do whatever you want) for release that have a EAN/UPC noone's gonna stop people from duplicating every single entry. Even his own ones only mess up the database too much.

Who died and made you the database god?

He can contribute them by Disc Id with proper documentation of the situation and the Screeners will decide whether they are to be added or not. Not you.

how about checking the rules first next time?

Quote:

If a title does not have a UPC, then add the title by Disc ID, using your DVD-ROM drive

his titles DO have a UPC and thus do not qualify for addition by disc-id

It's funny how you think the screeners could decide this. They have no way of knowing the release actually has a UPC if he doesn't mention it, unless of course he submits a cover scan (which he can't because he's thrown them away)

hydr0x is absolutely correct. We do not add discs to the database by id, if the release has a UPC. That would be a pointless inflation of the database. If someone has decided to discard the DVD package (the mere thought of it makes me cringe ) - well, tough luck for him!

mcioffi ,

If your titles are Region 1, look them up at Michael's Movie Mayhem.  This bills itself as "the Web's most complete database of Region 1 DVD releases -- Current, Future, Discontinued (Out-of-Print), Postponed, Cancelled with Price Comparisons" and is a "of 119,832 DVD Releases (Region 1)."  You ought to be able to find the UPC for your DVDs in this list - so you can create profiles and contribute them - without having to resort to the Disc-ID method.

If your titles are NOT Region 1, I have no idea how you can find the EAN to go with them.  But for R1, the above is the site for you.

[PS: I have nothing to do with this site and am just a satisfied user.]

Hi,
Thanks everyone, seems I touched a nerve here.  Just to touch on some highlights of the responses, the cases got thrown away by OCD wife that cannot stand clutter.  "Well if the DVD's are in the changer then why do we need these", thus the trash heap.  I had no input into the matter.

Thanks for the link I was wondering if there was something like that somewhere.

Finally just to be totally clear, my question was related to the fact that inserting them did not work, the title was not in the database and I did not have a UPC.  In 2 instances disk was not read, title was not there and I had the UPC but it did not work.

At any rate, thank you all for the suggestions.  I think I will try and update my list based on info from Michael's Movie Mayhem database and go from there.

Again thanks everyone.  I hope that the post helped others and not just my unenlightened self.

What do you do if there is no UPC, no title, and if you insert the DVD into the computer.....the disc is not recognized????

And yes they are legal copies...just really old movies that my dvd drive in the PC has a hard time reading but the dvd player plays them just fine.

Best you can do in those cases is to search by title and pick the profile that seems most likely to be the one you have!

You say they are legal, but there is not UPC, No Disc ID and you can't even give a title? Excuse me for sounding a trifle skeptical but...it just doesn't sound right. That said if you have No UPC or Disc ID, you can only enter it manually and never Contribute it. But if you don't even have a title I can't even begin to figure out how I would do it manually.

Well there is no UPC--this happens all the time. Most of these are foreign DVD's. 90% of them dont have it.

There is no title available in the database....which from what I understand only is available if someone else has contributed it? Correct?--So cant do it that way.

Cant insert by disc....because my PC's drive has a problem reading the discs.

So what does manually exactly mean? I only see 3 tabs to add dvd's in.
Is there some other way?

And yes they are legal!

Did he say that? I understood kktk said the disc ID is "not recognized", id est it is not found in the DVDP database, or his PC has problems reading those discs, but that doesn't mean there is "no Disc ID".

You could create a manual profile with "Add by UPC": enter a five-digit fake UPC, then enter the Title, Region and Locality.
That profile would be strictly local, not to be contributed to the online database.

Sorry but I've never seen any foreign DVD without a UPC.

Yes, you're right.

Do you only have a problem with just these particular DVD or all of them? If it's the second option change your DVD drive is career is over.

DVD/Add to collection/Add by title and uncheck "download profile from IVS". Don't forget that you can't contribute a manually entered DVD.

P.S : You don't need a fake UPC if you do like that. This is how I profile all my DVD-R.

Ah, is good, I thought you were saying there was not even a title on the DVD or On Screen. But without a UPC or Disc ID the best you can do is a manual Profile and don't Contribute it.
