Anti-Virus, Microsoft, Mozilla, every one of those have configuration options for updating automatically or only when the user tells it to.

A user wanting control of their PC is not a "conspiracy nut." It is simply a user who wants to be able to configure their computer the way they want.

If you're happy with software that does what it wants without giving the user control, then good for you.
