Wishes I could use a USB memory stick for backup

Skip

technically you can, just depends on how much you want to spend. supermediastore.com has a 16 gig one for $95 and newegg.com has some 32 gig ones for $255-280

and this article from april 2006 mentions some 64 gig ones

don't quite remember how big you said your backup is, but i think one of those should be able to handle it.

Another option could be to get a 2.5" hard drive and a little casing for it. Still very small, connects to the USB, has even more space than those sticks and should be cheaper at least than those 32gig (or larger) sticks.

Additionally, any personal information is not stored online.  Where and when purchased, how much paid, etc.  All that will be empty if you restore from online.  At least it used to.  It's not an experiment I've been willing to try to see if that has improved.

Though I've not tried it, if you ever did want to perform this test, I would think it would be safe to create a new database to restore to.  Still, it didn't used to save/restore everything back in the old days and I've just gotten used to using the true Backup/Restore options.  That's a much better option if you can do it.
Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here.

I use my online collection to keep my collection updated on two machines  all the time. Have been since 3.0. All of the information, including personal information, gets uploaded and all of it gets downloaded. The only thing I have to do is refresh whatever images are new.

It is very fast and very easy as compared to doing a backup/restore every time.

I've heard of some bugs with tags and child profiles but have yet to encounter any of them personally [knocks on wood]

Of course I still back up my collection but only need it in case something happens. In my case something would have to happen to both computers, highly unlikely, but I still do it.
