In this specific case (Wendecovers): the current rules on cover images already allow contribution of 'inner sleeves' if stickers or rating overlays are the only difference. Therefore there's no need for variants to get rid of those big ugly rating symbols on German releases.

It is. Older releases, first release and contribution, have no FSK-Logo, so there is the scan without it online. Do I buy the film today it is with FSK-Logo and often no Wendecover, though the scan for my release would have an FSK-Logo, while first release has none.

Even then, it still doesn't qualify as 'significantly different' in my book. Of course, your mileage may vary.

I have voiced similar thoughts (about the subjective nature of words like 'significantly') in the contribution rules committee forum.

In this specific case (Wendecovers): the current rules on cover images already allow contribution of 'inner sleeves' if stickers or rating overlays are the only difference. Therefore there's no need for variants to get rid of those big ugly rating symbols on German releases.

Only a small part of the German releases have inner sleeves without the rating logo. So therefore I have many scans in my local database I cannot contrbute because they have the new rating logo even if they are significantly better in quality than the pictures of the original releases.

In my opinion the new feature is a chance to make such local changes to the data unnesseccary and to give users the possibility to download a profile that matches exactly the release that they own. If this means a big increase of profiles in the database then this only reflects the huge amount of different releases in the real world. I don't understand SwissFilm's argument about the problem to keep the data accurate. The owners of each release decide with their contributions how accurate they want their data to be. Nobody has to edit profiles of releases he/she does not own.

But instead it seems like Ken's intention is more like adding another chapter to the long book of rules that are so ambiguous that there will be endless debates about them every few weeks.
Recently bought films:

The Matrix [Blu-ray] | Shirins Wedding [DVD] | The Graduate [Blu-ray] | Prometheus [Blu-ray 3D] | Hwal [DVD]

Ken has said that he has a plan for a future release that will address the problem of releases whose only difference is cover images.

We should all try to exercise some patience and respect the decisions that he makes as the owner of the program.

OK, that is a word. If he will do in a future release perhaps that a film can have different covers and when downloading the profile you can choose which cover you like, then I agree. Then really we should not start contributions just because it's another cover, let's then better wait. Ken should perhaps tell all so it is clear why not now and wait.

Thanks for all your replies, I am just pleased to know it is being discussed in the Rules Committee.

I have many DVDs where the Slip Cover and the Keep Case cover are two completely different covers.

In those cases you should have no problems contributing them to the database once 3.9 is released.
