it should never be Vs.  unless that is what the title actually is.

Maybe someday Ken will allow us to lock our local title data.

Another example that Oscar Wilde was right.

So you are saying because we can lock our locals that we shouldn't care about having good rules for the online database?

I'm saying that those who are interested (theoretically) have an opportunity to join the discussion in the Contribution Rules Committee Forum and have their say.  I believe this was your last comment on the matter:

I definitely prefer with!  Having it capitalized looks wrong!    But glad if a clear rule is in place.

That is much clearer answer than your previous lazy post.

I stand by that statement.  A clear rule is good, but only if it doesn't drive silly nonsensical updates.

Then you should have brought up your concerns in that thread and proposed a better rule update.  I believe the quote above was your sole contribution to the discussion.  There is now another thread in the Contribution Rules Committee Forum where you can make constructive suggestions if you have something to add.

As opposed to your constructive comments?

I stand by that statement on it's own.  I think most times clear cut rules are better than vague ones.

But if the phrasing in question is causing good information to be overwritten with bad information than I change my mind.  Many times something looks great on paper, but when it is applied the flaws become self evident.  When I see submissions such for "Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World" to overwrite the correct "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" and "Stranger Than Fiction" over "Stranger than Fiction" in the first two days then it is apparent there is an issue.  Google "change-up movie" and you will see the first page littered with websites that refer to the movie as "The Change-Up", I looked through the first ten pages of results, almsot all had something to do with the movie and all refereed to it as "The Change-Up" and I didn't find one instance of it being called "The Change-up", so how is this a good rule?

You also seem to make it out that being involved in the "Contribution Rules Committee Forum" means anything.  It doesn't.  Anyone can get access (I know, since you and me both have access), it's not like it's a special club.

There are no functional differences in how the program behaves regardless of how you capitalize titles, so what difference does it make other than to offend your sense of style?

My sense of style?  What are you talking about?  I'm talking about the Title information.  If you don't care why are you taking the time to talk about it?

I guess I will bite and answer your question.  Why do I care?  Because when I purchase a new DVD or blu-ray, and add it to my collection, I am hoping that the downloaded information will be correct, and I won't have to take the time to have to "fix it" to the correct title.

"Correct" is whatever the rules say is correct.  If it's been entered according to the rules it is correct.

My point is that you don't care what the actual film title is compared to what is in the database.

I want to join the rules committee, but I would end up just asking myself how I am supposed to soar like an eagle when I'm flying with turkeys.

This constant silliness is the main reason I stopped contributing a couple years back, and why I will still only add the bare minimum.

The rule should have said not to capitalize articles, coordinating conjunctions and prepositions less than 5 characters. Using a list is a mistake because some will always be overlooked.

I fully agree with you, Hal.

Normally it is easy, just sent a PM to Ken or use the support ticket system.

Hmm. Looks like the right person saw my post and finally added me.  I'd been sending PM's periodically to no avail.

Why not use "Sentence case".
Quote:
In most newspapers in the U.S. (and in virtually all publications in the U.K.), sentence case (also known as down style) is the standard form for headlines.

Sentence case

This is the standard form for titles and headlines in most countries. The rule will be simple and easy to understand and it will be consistent for most languages.
