if you will go to the screen where we enter a new cast member, you will see that it asks for three separate fields: First Name, Middle Name, Last Name.

I actually didn't think I would need to explain this as it is pretty self-evident.

Thank you very much for condescending to help me understand this very complex issue.

Now, tell me again why it matters since Jean / Paul / Lastname and Jean Paul // Lastname both display and sort the same?

If you cannot understand plain English, there is no point in repeating myself.  I never said anything about displaying or sorting, did I?

Parsing problems cannot be solved easily without documentation. To complicate things, double given names or double family names can have, or not, a - between them:

We have credits with JEAN PAUL BELMONDO, and (mostly) with JEAN-PAUL BELMONDO
and we have credits with KRISTIN SCOTT-THOMAS, and (mostly) with KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS.

Even one field name will not allow linking for those variants, and the research for common name through CLT results needs documentation to find all variants.

Filling a database needs accuracy and that cannot be done without work, just with automatisms. Nobody is obliged to contribute, so people who do should be sure they send correct data.

It is not Accurate to give someone a middle name who doesn't have one, just because it is "easier" for data entry purposes.

Based on this criteria, there would be nothing wrong with taking the following title (which includes the hyphen on the DVD cover):

Title: Amityville II: The Possession

and entering it as:

Title: Amityville II
Edition: The Possession

After all, it will display the same, as long as you select use of a "preceding colon" for the "Edition Field", and it will sort perfectly fine, especially if you enter the the complete DVD title in the "Sort Title" field.

The only problem is, "The Possession" is not an edition; it is part of the title, therefore, it would be inaccurate to enter it in the "Edition" field; just like it would be inaccurate to enter part of someone's first name in the "Middle Name" field.

And, as long as you enable color coding for the cast list, it most certainly does not display correctly when you put names in the wrong fields.

Putting the second part of a two part first name into a Middle Name field is not "giving someone a middle name".  As you suggest, this is done for convenience.  No names are harmed in the process.

Not for me, since I have DVDP set to not display edition information.

So your argument is changing from one about "accuracy" to one about "harm".  At least you seem to be accepting that it is not accurate to put the second part of a two-part first name in the middle name field.

As far as harm goes, we can enter everything into the into the first name field and "No names are harmed in the process".  That's a pretty silly argument.

If all we're after is convenience, then I say leave out the cast and crew altogether and put in a link to IMDb.  That would be very convenient for data entry.

My comment about accurate data was in direct response to surfeur's comment about correct data.  Nothing more need be made of it.

Other than the ability to sort by last name, no.  However, I'd like to be able to sort by last name.

I asked before, and you didn't answer, so I'll ask again.  Where, within DVDP, do you go to sort the actor list by last name?

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but there is a way to sort by name: Tools > Options > Actor Name Format > First Middle Last or Last, First Middle.

Thanks, Kathy, but all that does is change the order in which the name fields are displayed in your profiles.

I'm still trying to figure out where in the program you can actually sort the actor list by last name.

I don't think it is an option, but

In the filter list for cast and crew it sorts by last name...

Not that you can select, but edit profile cast and crew selection is listed on last name...

After reading all the discussions, I am not sure how a single name field would work very well.

Some how a last name would need to be extracted, so that in the selection process on certain screens could be listed correctly.  I am more apt to know a last name, and as a society we mentally sort on last name when looking through lists.

So if we could overcome that limitation, which in most cases would be the name after the last space.

Even we don't get it right all the time, so I am not sure how to get a program to do it, without us telling it to (so might as well have a separate family name field).

I could like the idea of 2 fields (Given, family), it would end a few problems (although "nicknames" would need to be dealt with)

Well, my opinion

As I understand it, it is used when exporting the data.  I don't export my data, so am not sure how it is being used after that but, if I remember correctly, that is what they don't want to lose.

The more I think about it, the more I am liking this idea.  Especially if the fields were titled "Given Name" and "Family Name"  This would not only solve the question of parsing for 12/3 vs 1/2/3 but would also give a sort-of solution for Asian names (as you would input the person's family name in that field and the given name in its field, and then simply enter the order credited in the credited as field if it is different from the default way the Given & Family names display).

As for nicknames, I think the best option if this were implemented would be to enter them in the Given Name field, since they are a sort of given name.
