But that's another version of the Program. So I am left still wondering if this is necessary for something less than 1%, by adding a confusing conditional or just ride as it was til the next version. I would be inclined to think it's not necessary, when a better fix can be had.

1% of the Online is 4800 titles roughly. Is this a conditional which is really necessary, I am not sure that it is. I hate conditionals even when they are necessary, Ken, as I am sure you know, but they are necessary to every database I have ever seen or designed, but unnecessary ones always tend to gum up the works.

Actually the current rule is about as straightforward as we can get.  If a rated version is on the disc, use the rating.

The other direction requires us to define what we mean by an "Unrated Version".  I think many are thinking of "Unrated Edition" or "Unrated Director's Cut" or other variations.  What about a normal rated version that also includes seamless branching? That version is not rated.  What about commentary? Also not rated.

If we just say "if a NR version is on the disc, use NR", and strictly use that rule, we end up with many titles having their rating stripped.  I don't think that's the outcome we're after.

If you really want to separate NR and Unrated for "filtering for an audience" you don't only have a problem with those that have both the rated version as well as an unrated version on the disc. You have a problem with any and all Unrated versions of movies. They will still filter with the NR... and tell us nothing.

Yes, but a better solution would be to allow users to assign an age to each NR-rated title locally, and to add theatrical rating as a field.

That is "A" solution... but definitely NOT a better solution! (IMHO)

NOTE: The Below is how I personally see it....

With your "solution":
- Still can't see a difference in the rating between NR and Unrated = Con
- Everyone has to go through EVERY NR rated disc and add an age to it = Con!
- It has to wait for the next version = Con
- Does give the option of an age... even if it is a TON of work for everyone! = Pro

Adding Unrated to the Ratings"
- Can be done right away = Pro
- Everyone can work together to get the info in = Pro
- We can see the difference at a glance between NR and Unrated = Pro
- Simply put it is not Local Only = Pro
- It works for ALL unrated... whether there is a rated version of the disc or not = Pro
- We are unable to see the rated version listed = Con

To me the pros well outweigh the cons for adding the Unrated to the list.
Pete

That is what I always did and that is actually what I am after .
And maybe I am mistaken, but I think nearly everyone here wants it that way. If an unrated version is on the disc, the rating entry has to be NR (Not rated)

Who actually cares for the Rated version if there is also an unrated version on the disk ?

Only other solution <i would be fine with is what Pete suggested, to add UNrated as an option

just my 2 cents

(It is what I always was after as well)

Though I still personally think we NEED both Unrated and NR!!!

Regardless of the outcome, personally I'll be tracking the Unrated/Not Rated versions. As DarklyNoon said, I'm more interested in that version than a rated version if both exist for a release.

So to clarify, if there is any sort of modified version on the disc that doesn't have a rating, the position is that we use "NR"?

Even for titles with a rating on the cover, and a rated version on the disc, and no mention of "Unrated Version" on the cover?

Yes, I think that is what most here want, Unrated ALWAYS overrules any rated version on the disk.

YES! That is how most of us has always done it... and is the info that I believe most of us is after.

But I still feel the need to add unrated to the ratings... and change it from NR to Unrated!

Yes, Unrated/Not Rated trumps rated.
