A question concerning RC2 DVDs. There are a couple of discs with the directors/authors/actors name as a prefix in the title, e.g. "Peter Jacksons Bad Taste" (EAN 4038637151808), the title credited in the film is "Bad Taste". Or another example: The Pacifier is released in Germany with the title "Der Babynator", the cover says "Vin Diesel in Der Babynator" (EAN8717418025144). Are these prefixes (all not credited in the film itself as part of the title) a reason for using the modified title rule? I do not hope so!

Strictly by the Rules:

"Title
Use the title from the film's credits."

If it's not ON Screen then No.

Sorry, Skip, but that is simply total BS. You don't take the title from the credits for foreign films, otherwise nearly every German profile would have an English title. That's exactly why we have the rule for Foreign Films (thank God there weren't only Americans in the rules committee).

In the case schizzo is asking about, you have to use the rule for modified titles. It's exactly the same as for "There's something more about Mary" and "John Carpenter's Vampires".

I've had the discussion in the german forum with tigihof about that topic. "John Carpenter's Vampires" is correct because it's the title shown in the film itself, "There's something more about Mary" is a modified title because the title itself is modified. But adding a prefix (another example is "H.P. Lovecraft's Dagon", it's in the database as "Dagon") results IMHO not in a modified title. For me it's not really part of the title, it's just kind of an advertising slogan.

I've looked at the 2 examples you've given and I think in those cases that the prefixes are not part of the title.
With Bad Taste, Peter Jackson's name is obviously much smaller, a different colour and different font - separating it from the title.
With The Pacifier, although Vin Diesel's name is about the same size as the title, the use of the phrasing "Vin Diesel ist..." again separates it from the title. This example is simply about star power, they're putting the name of the actor above the title as they believe people will buy the DVD more for his name than for the film.
However, in theory, if you did have an example where the prefix has been made part of the title on the DVD cover, then you would follow the "Something More About Mary" example in the rules.

@northbloke: I totally agree with you. I think in most cases a prefix is not part of the title. It's separated by colour or by fonts size or by whatever. It's better to look what is the original title (for foreign releases to look what is the theatrical release title in the specific country) than using one to one the title plus prefix printed on the cover.
The only example that comes to my mind is "John Carpenter's Vampires" because the prefix is part of the original title as shown in the film.

That used to be the rules, but not anymore. Now "strictly what you see on screen" goes in the Original Title field, and what's printed on the DVD cover goes in the Title field. At least, that's how people now seem to be interpreting:

Modified Titles: The Original Title field will contain the original theatrical title, while the Title field will contain the title of the DVD release.
99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1."
