Hi!

I've reported this a long time ago, but it's still not fixed. So here we go again:

When I add a new DVD, the "Personalize DVD" dialog opens. I can enter purchase infos, collection infos, ratings, tags and notes. However: the "Discs" section is always emtpy! That's extremely annoying, because I'd like to enter a location immediately (without having to edit the DVD after adding it to the collection). And every DVD has at least 1 disc if it has a collection number assigned!

If the information about discs is not yet available at the time the "Personalize DVD" dialog opens, a simple workaround could be implemented: the discs section should contain a default item "Main Feature" which could be used to take the location info for at least one disc. When the DVD is added to the collection, the profile will be downloaded and the info about discs becomes available. Then, DVDP simply needs to check if there is at least one disc present in the profile, and assing the entered location to the main feature. This would be easy to implement and would be correct in almost all cases.

The problem with the missing disc also applies to the "Edit Profile" dialog. When I activate the "Discs" tab and add a disc, it will not be shown in the "Personal Information" tab. That's very annoying, because I then I need to close the edit dialog with "Ok" and reopen the profile by double-clicking it.Only then, the newly added disc will be available for personalization.

Also, I think when adding a completely new DVD, the discs list should be initialized with a default item "Main Feature". Every DVD has at least 1 disc and if this would be pre-initialized, people would not forget to add them. There are so many profiles where people forgot to add the disc info, and this could be easily prevented.

I hope these problems will finally be fixed, because they are really annoying and cost a lot of time when adding new DVDs. But actually thea are easy to fix, so I don't understand why these bugs still exists.

Regards,
Martin

Perhaps its a bug to you, but not to the developer or other users. I find your tone to be very off-putting  and very insulting. My initial reaction, is if you think its so easy to fix then just write your program.

Or don't have a dvdrom so can't or choose not to. What I personally don't understand is why people submit Main Feature etc... when they don't actually add the disc id info into it.

If I understand you correctly, then this is not bug but a missing feature

I would hesitate to call it either.  Why would anyone expect something to be in that area on a new profile?  What he wants is to be able to add the disc id stuff in the personalize area, instead of in the edit mode later.  If you're going to do that you may as well make all the edit functions available at that level.

I'd rather see it stay as it is now.

Okay, then let's call it a change request

No, what he wants to do is add the location info as he is adding the DVD to his collection. To add this data you need to have a disc but don't need its ID.

@ skipnet50: I'm not insulting or offending, I'm just pointing out the obvious. As usual, you are missing the point and you are complaining instead of actually thinking about the issue and contributing ideas how to fix the problems. The way you are talking for the developers and all users is cute - how many developers and users did you ask about their opinion on this?

@pdf256: Exactly - thanks, you got my point!

@Lithurge: There are several reasons. E.g. a very obvious one: sometimes I get a bunch of new DVDs and I don't want to open them immediately (original shrink wrap). I still know how many discs it has and what the discs are. To get all infos about the film, I don't need to insert and watch it.

@all: I'd answer the question if this is a bug or a missing feature as follows:

1) The "Personalize DVD" dialog has input fields for the discs and their locations. The discs info is always empty (although many DVDs have that info already) and I can never enter data into these fileds - I'd call this a bug, or what are these fields for if they can never be used?

2) In the "Edit Profile" dialog, I can add a disc, but it will not be available for personalization until I close and reopen the dialog - maybe that's not a bug, but still inconvenient (or annoying if you do this often).

Both can easily be fixed, believe me! I'm a programmer myself and I know what I'm talking about. I don't have the time to create my own DVDP (as skipnet50 so ingeniously suggested), but I'm asking the developers to spend the 10 minutes for fixing these issues, because I know that most users would take profit from this.

Regards!

I still don't see what actual benefit this gives? Most dvds tell you what they have on the cover, i.e. one or two discs and it's fairly easy to work out what's going to be on each disc.

The adding location info somebody else has suggested doesn't stack up if you don't open the shrink wrap.

Why do I need to open a DVD to enter its location? The location doesn't have to be a disc changer or other media system. It could be a case, a box, a cabinet, a cupboard - even a room! When you have several thousand DVDs, this does make sense! I need to assign a general location to a new title, not to the discs.

Don't assume everybody works the way you do...

That's not so. I use the location field to indicate which shelf of which DVD rack I put the package. This allows my family to locate the package should they want to play it. The fact that the field is associated with a disc is of no particular relevance to me as I don't have a changer, but I do want to know where the thing is, and I work with what Ken has given us.

I agree that being able to do this at profile add time would make life simpler for me, but it's a pretty minor irritation. As a programmer, I know from irritation
