I actually have that DVD player in my basement home theater. It is a nice piece of equipment but there are several things that are left out. They have intentionally left them out so that if you find them interesting you will purchase the higher model. If you are looking for some good basic on screen abilities, such as sorting by Title, Actor (only the first one you put in) or Genre (again only first one you put in), this will suit your needs. There is of course a spot you can tell DVD Profiler where the disc is located at. The only way this unit gets information to sort, catalog, etc is by you inputting the information. This unit does allow you to connect a PS2 keyboard for much easier input of information. I have read by many people that they have lost all the information in their Sony previously, but I can assure you that this does not happen because of power outage or turning the unit off as some have reported. One downside is that this unit does not have serial connectivity or any other way to connect it to a PC. If that is something you require, check out the SONY DVP-CX777ES. One of my old roommates has this one and some accompanying software (that uses DVD Profiler XML file) -- called Cinemar. He spent a small mint on everything but that was a few years ago and as all technology goes, the prices have fallen quite a bit. One downside of both of these is that you may have 300 DVDs now and it will hold 400... but that won't last... soon you will have way too many DVDs for the changer. At least with the CX777ES you can connect up to 16 of them together  |
