I tried searching the forum, but no luck.  I have a modified PS2 CueCat that someone sent me.

When I tried to scan the barcode, I get nothing.  I even tried using Notepad or Word and still get nothing.  The light is on.

Any ideas?

If it's not working in notepad then it sounds like a cuecat problem.
Might be a daft question, but have you tried a variety of barcodes? It might be that one it can't read.
I find with my cuecat, I've got to get the angle and the swipe across just right to get it to read sometimes.
If you're scanning through the dvd sleeve, try moving the barcode outside the plastic - that might be having an effect too.

Sometimes, I have to swipe many times as well but it helps that you can swipe in either direction so I just go to town until it works.

CueCats can be a bit testy about when/what they read... in addition to the other mentioned tips, swiping with a fairly slow, even speed seems to help. (e.g. at about 2-3 inches/second)

The other thing is that the PS2 model is a Keyboard Wedge sort... it won't work by itself, you must have a keyboard attached inline also (or a keyboard terminator instead.)  I only mention this because most new keyboards are USB, and I often see the PS2 ports unused, if present.

Nice Info, didn't knew that. (never needed to try because old PS2-keyboard still in use)

In addtion, there are PS2toUSB converters out there. If you can pick up one cheap you might try it. Big advantage: You can put away the scanner while not needed, which unclutters your PC-area.
On that converter my Cuecat works without keyboard, most likely the converter is more forgiving on things like correct termination.

Never thought about it not working with it not being connected through a keyboard.

I guess I either need to get the converter, or a USB version.

I have the USB version and it works like a champ!  It has a standby mode but I unplug it anyways when not in use.  When I plug it in, it's ready to work in seconds.
