| Posted: | | | | I'm just starting to try to figure out if DVD Profiler will work for me.
My theater PC is not connected to the internet.
Will I be able to set up DVD Profiler with my DVD inventory on a notebook computer, install the Profiler software on my theater PC and then transfer the Profiler DVD inventory data from my notebook to the theater PC?
I am just looking for a DVD inventory management system now.
Thank you. |

Thank you. |

| Posted: | | | | The entire database of your particular inventory will reside on your notebook. The software only goes to the online database when you're adding new DVDs to your collection so it can download the info to your PC. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

| Posted: | | | | You do not have to upload your collection to the online. That is purely optional, but it can provide an emergency backup for everything except cover art. | | | Kevin |

| Posted: | | | | If I were to get the backup files from my uploaded collection how hard is it to get the cover art restored too?
How can I determine which barcode scanner will work best with my notebook?
Thank you. | | | Last edited: by itsme |

As Antolod said, it's completely optional if you want to upload your collection for others to see. The one thing it does allow is for you to vote on changes to the main profiles in the online DB if you care about the ability to do so. It's also possible to upload your collection but then hide it from the public. This way you don't have to worry about others seeing what you own, yet you still have the ability to vote on changes being made to the main profiles. If you don't care about the ability to vote or letting others see your collection then there's no need to upload it. Quoting itsme: Quote: If I were to get the backup files from my uploaded collection how hard is it to get the cover art restored too?. When you run the backup, you have the option to include cover scans and the cast/crew database (including actor/crew photos) in your backup, so it's no problem to transfer your entire database back and forth between PCs using the backups. In fact, it's the best method since it will retain all your custom data (assuming you make any changes to your profiles after downloading them from the online database. Using the upload collection/download collection as a form a backup is really not recommended unless you keep your database vanilla (meaning you use what's in the online database and never change anything yourself). Quoting itsme: Quote: How can I determine which barcode scanner will work best with my notebook? The most widely used barcode scanner is the USB Cuecat scanner. In order to function as a normal barcode scanner you will need to "declaw" or "neuter" the scanner (a play on the fact that it's shaped like a cat, but basically means you have to mod the hardware). Luckily though, it's pretty easy to find already declawed scanners on both eBay and Amazon. I bought one off Amazon (through a reseller) a few months ago for $10 so they're pretty cheap as well. Just doing a search on Amazon for "modified cue cat" should bring up several results. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

Thank you. It's certainly not my intention to "spoil the fun" here, but a few aspects need attention if you're going to install DVD Profiler on a PC without Internet connection: 1) program registration: whereas it IS allowed to install DVD Profiler on several computers based on a single registration, I'm not sure whether you can unlock the program and get it working on an unlimited registration without Internet access; 2) essential files: as far as I know, there's a couple of files DVD Profiler needs to download initially to start functioning, like an Actor list etc. Perhaps it would be possible as a workaround to transfer these from your other PC. I'm insufficiently familiar with all the technical details here, but perhaps other users can provide more information on these issues. |

it doesn't make any difference if it is the same as the main database or not, all the data is transferred back/forth to the online database (including personal data). (although in order to make it more efficient only changes are uploaded/downloaded each time so its much quicker). of course this isn't any good for itsme since he has no access to the Internet on his theatre PC. | | | Paul | | | Last edited: by pauls42 |

I know that the unlocking uses a registration key which you need to enter and I thought that it didn't validate that on the Internet. I've looked in the knowledge base and nothing is shown there. | | | Paul | | | Last edited: by pauls42 |
