H2testw 1.3
http://www.heise.de/software/download/h2testw/50539

Our German friends made a test program for USB Sticks. In short the market seems to been flooded with cheap fake USB memory sticks. The controler of the chip hads been manipulated to let it operate as it has the mentioned capacity on the stick but it has only 1/4 of the memory on board. A 4 GB stick let you write 4 GB without fault messages. When you want to retrieve your data it seems to be there but is corrupt. There is only 1 GB in the stick and all data writen to the stick overwrite itself.
follow the link: Zur Download-Seite

the faker become more and more impudent:

all jokes aside, I'm a victim of this as well. Lately I bought a 1GB and a 2GB USB stick at a big German electronic store (M****markt). After copying some big files, all data are corrupt after restoring from both sticks. Only small files can be copied...

The old house owners rule applies here too.
It's:
"If you buy it cheap, you'll have to buy it twice".

Sure, it's nice that everything related to electronics gets cheaper every day, but the price has to come from somewhere. There's no such thing as a free dinner.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

This is why eBay has PAYPAL.. You pay by Paypal and if you get burnt (false)/ never received/not working etc  on an item you are protected by and reimbursed by Paypal.. They'll then get their money back..
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

According to your description that seems to work in Canada.

Here in Germany it doesn't work. On the IT news your read on a regular basis about trouble with PayPal/eBay.

But in this case the USB sticks were sold through regular electronic shops.

due to the modified controller these slipped thrugh the quality control. you can write the data amount labelled on the stick. It's only when retrieving the data you noticed something was wrong!

I noticed it two years ago.
In a local shop I bought a 1GB MP3 player (not cheap then), but I could only save 512MB on it, everything else just disappeared.
