| Posted: | | | | Lately, I've reviewed a couple of submissions where the data is copied from an existing child profile, or a different region disc, where the submission contained incorrect (or invalid for that region) information that often get an automatic "yes" vote without further scrutiny. I just want to remind everyone that we shouldn't assume that the following automatically correct (or even the same) disc information: Discs released in different regionsChild profile data moved into parent profilesNewer editions of a previously released titleAll of these contribution types should be given the exact same scrutiny we would give for any other contribution. I'm done ranting. And skip didn't pay me to say this. Why would you think that? | | | Last edited: by Leiterfluid |

| Posted: | | | | I have copied data from other profiles of the same title to save on typing, but then I verify that all the info is correct against the title that I have in hand. I do not assume that the data from the title that I am copying from is correct. |

Just Copying = Lazy
Copying & Reviewing what you copied = Efficient! I can buy into that. |

| Posted: | | | | I think that if you want to copy you have to copy well 1. Choose a good Source profile, not any profile, and download two or three profiles from contributors you usually trust. 2. Compare them: analyse Cast and Crew lists using the Name Variants Tool and find out if some names do not match in all profiles; 3. Verify names on screen, especially those names that don't match in all profiles. | | | -- Enry | | | Last edited: by White Pongo, Jr. |

Just Copying = Lazy
Copying & Reviewing what you copied = Efficient! Exactly! Not only do you save time from copying, but you can correct 2 profiles at once if there's bad info on the one you copy from. I've done this and submitted both for a couple low budget horror movies where my disc id matched and existing, but had rental UPC's that weren't in the DB yet. |

Actually, submissions stating "Source: profile xxx" have constantly been accepted, AFAIK. | | | -- Enry | | | Last edited: by White Pongo, Jr. |

| Posted: | | | | I see no problem for it when adding initial info. Info from another profile which hasn't been closely scrutinized is better than nothing. This is how I generally add new editions of movies. | | | Last edited: by Ace_of_Sevens |

Why would you think that? For the Seinfeld Season Set there was no crew or cast data...I don't recall which. Taking the data from another season was quite alright by me. There may have been errors in there but the good data surely outweighed the bad data and it's better than nothing in there. I did a quick scan of it and it looked alright to me...you could have done the same. Question is if it's that big a deal why didn't you verify some of the submission instead of just voting 'no'. You got 10 contributions and you're telling people who bother to contribute how it should be done. That's very amusing. It's easy to just sit around and wait for people around you to build the database for you...why don't you try getting in there and doing something. In my opinion that guy's submission did a lot more for the database than your 'no' vote. I would take 1 of him over 10 of you any day. | | | Last edited: by Bodi |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting tweeter: Quote: Just Copying = Lazy Nope, when roughly 50% of DVD's i buy arent even in the database, i think its a waiste of time. Because i either add 5 new profiles that might have minor mistakes in the cast/crew or i only add 1. Either way i use the same amount of time adding whenever i contribute profiles, so its not lazyness | | | Last edited: by whispering |

Why would you think that? You must have missed the 18 page thread in the features forum where Skip tried to mount a campaign to do exactly that... copy cast and crew data between profiles, in order to try to "make the alias table more accurate." In fact, after enough people told him that this was a bad idea, he broke down and announced that he was leaving DVD Profiler and the forums forever! | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." | | | Last edited: by Grendell |

If people would put the data in the Parent Profile and submit it as well, when they submit the Child profiles for TV series as required by the Rules, you wouldn't be seeing people copying data that they didn't submit from those child profiles into the parents. I've ended up aggregating the cast and crew data submitted by contributors I would not question the data from and populate it into the parent for that season because said users don't agree with the Rule which requires the data in the Parent as well as the child profiles for TV series. | | | Chris |
