Since buying the player, which is great apart from this problem, every subtitled film I have watched has had pixelated/blocky subtitles. Anyone got any idea how to rectify this or am i stuck with it? | | | MY COLLECTION

DVD subtitles are stored on the DVD as bitmaps, but when they get upconverted it can be ugly. You could try setting the DVD player to 480 over HDMI and let the TV do the upconversion but still have the advantage of the all digital signal path.
If it's a cheap player you might want to take it back and buy a fire sale Toshiba HD DVD player since they cost less then a good upconverting DVD player and work quite well. Even if you never buy any HD DVDs it's a good deal. But if you are thinking of buying a BR player just wait and they can upconvert well too. | | | | Tom. |

what player? The dvd player is a Toshiba SD-360esb, my TV is a Pioneer HD plasma and i think (without pulling the player out of the cabinet) at the moment my player is connected with just a scart lead. Never had a problem with my other toshiba player, just this one. | | | MY COLLECTION

Do you have antoher scart to try, not all scart have the RGB wired up, and do use only the component video, wich gives a worse display. If your out of HDMI connection to connect to your Pioneer HD plasma if it has one. HDMI would give you the best result. Yeah, I think i'm gonna invest in a HDMI switch box as my plasma only has one input. As for the scart lead, it is the same lead as i used on my old player and that was fine. But as you suggest, I'll try a HDMI lead if I can find one thats long enough | | | MY COLLECTION

| | Posted: | | | | In view of the fact that your player is connected by Scart: in the setup of your DVD player, did you set the video output to RGB? If it is still set to composite (which usually is the default setting for analog output), this might explain your problems. |

I will check mt component/rgb connections first though, just out of interest. I'm goona hold off blu-ray for now after reading the problems with the firmware. | | | MY COLLECTION
