Microsoft has yet to come forward with an official statement on Toshiba’s decision to drop HD DVD. Analysts however, already believe that the company may be facing increasing pressure from Sony as a result of the outcome of the format war.

In what way will this hurt the XBOX 360???  Ultimately the 360 is a gaming console, and still maintains a significant lead over the PS3 in hardware and software sales while the Wii continues to lead in hardware sales if I am not mistaken!!!

If/when the PS3 starts to release a significant exclusive game title to compete with the XBOX 360, then perhaps Microsoft should begin to worry about its future!!!

Microsoft says "We will wait until we hear from Toshiba before announcing any specific plans around the Xbox 360 HD DVD player."
Playstation 3 climbs ahead of Xbox 360 in January
Port Washington (NY) - The latest numbers from NPD are in and the PS3 reached the #2 console spot, although it's really more because Xbox 360 sales are tapering off.

Microsoft not "announcing any specific plans" over HD DVD:
Microsoft has issued a statement saying it has not made a decision on whether or not to continue to support HD DVD on the Xbox 360.

I agree with Calidain. I think PS3 hardware sales will go up. The PS3 is a great Blu-ray player. When i decide to buy a blu-ray player I more than likely will be buying a PS3. I think many people see the PS3 as a top notch blu-ray player but not that great of a game console (lack of titles). It has the potential to be one. But as hardware sales go up software sales (games) will not rise equally with hardware sales. Like Calidain said there isn't really any significant exclusive title out just yet.

GTA 4 will be a big boost for the PS3. You will see the software sales of GTA 4 on the 360 and PS3 have a smaller gap between them unlike other currently released titles ie. CoD 4.

As for MS, with HD-DVD going away why can't they manufacture a Blu-ray player add-on?

I agree that the PS3 is a great blu-ray player because I think it is easily kept up to date on the blu-ray profiles and enhancements.  As for a gaming system, most the time I forget it also plays games.

As for blu-ray hurting Xbox, I don't see it.  The 360 is a gaming console that you can add HD DVD playability to it.  If they were going to push so hard for HD DVD I think they would have made that part of the console instead of an add-on.  For all we know the only reason MS went with HD DVD was because Sony had blu-ray.

I have to sound in and say that (as a person who sells video game systems)  if sony wants to push microsoft off the mat, then they have to get more games out for their system.  right now there is at least a 3 to 1 margin on 360's to PS3 titles available.  and if the roumors are correct, when microsoft gets the blu-ray add on, the only problem would be the 3 red ring of death.

I have no problem believing Microsoft.  But their denials are only accurate until they're ready to make a formal announcement.  Or change their minds and then make a formal announcement.  That may never happen of course.  But you never know.

That's not to say it won't happen. But IIRC (i read the article when Funky first posted it, so 2 days ago now) Microsoft only said they weren't in talks, and possibly some stuff about not planning it at this time. It's a business decision though, so what they perceive as the best course today may change tomorrow and they can easily change their mind. But as it stands right now, I wouldn't expect a blu-ray drive for the x-box 360
