I was able to open and update the program last Thursday. I am unaware of any Vista updates that have been sneak installed since then but, as of today I can no longer use the program. I receive an error when I try to run it:

Access violation at address 00A9E81C in module 'dvdpro.exe'. Write of address 00000014.

I tried using the included database repair utility. I tried downloading and installing a completely updated and separate copy of the program. Neither worked I get the same error whether I use the longtime installed version or the new empty database install.

I have a vista home premium machine that has been using the program perfectly for over 6 months.

Anyone have anything similar or any ideas on what may have happened?

** UPDATE
I uninstalled the program and reinstalled figuring I could restore from my backup. Once uninstalled and rebooted I reinstalled. The program began just fine asking for user name and registration info. Then asked if I wanted to open program or reinstall from backup. I choose backup. Regular boot sequence started with the eye and froze for 10min. I closed program and tried to reopen and got once again the above error.

You updated from which version to which?

Try a complete new installation (don't change the default path) and choose "Open Program" this time. Reinstall the backup via DVDPro menu "File -> Restore Profile Database".

The "freezing" indicates that a security feature interfers. So go Offline and disable all security software (Firewall, Virusscan, Anti-Spyware, etc) see if the problem still occurs.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Try starting the program while holding down the Ctrl key. The program may take a while to start but stick with it. This process will reset the program with the default settings.

Thanks for your quick responses. Telecine I can load if I hold ctl key down. But, only if I hold control key down. If I try anything after same error. Can work in it for hours no problem but once I close can't open again unless ctl is down. Goblinsdoitall, by update I meant use... ie add profiles update the stuff waiting for update add new dvd's I bought not actually updating the program itself. I have been using the most current version since it was beta. I did try doing the new installation into the original path. When you open the program for the first time it asks for Reg info then I tried both open program or update from backup. Both seem to start but stop. I did have alll Virus/spyware turned off I use Zone Alarm and Spybot both were shut down. I do not use windows defender it is off and I had the installer running as admin in vista. Still stuck. I can open at least to look at stuff can even make updates and changes, but must open with ctl key down every time.

Sounds like a Vista problem to me. Possibly the best idea is to open a support ticket.

FYI, I believe the problem (while it may be Vista-related) might just be local to Jstrking.  I use XP Pro here at home and Vista Ultimate at work (yes, I do profile in my spare time at work  ) and I have had no problems.

My suggestion:
Quote:
Open DVD Profiler anyway you can.
Upload your collection online
If you have any cover scans you want to keep, drag the Images folder to your desktop (located in c:/Users/[username]/DVD Profiler/ )
Uninstall DVD Profiler and remove EVERYTHING (delete the folder DVD Profiler in your Documents & from the c:/Program Files folder
Reboot
Reinstall DVD Profiler (do not import anything yet)
Open DVD Profiler
Update (-> Online -> Refresh Online Profile List)
Download your collection from online
Restore your images (drag the image folder back to where it was)

Hopefully this will work for you.  Good luck!

Well it's good to see that we can get you this far. I suspect that the issue is one relating to some customisation of application settings since holding down the ctrl key merely loads profiler with the default settings.

Just so that we can eliminate db corruption, next time you load the application, try a database repair.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, try using the default settings for profiler for things like the layout and remove plugins etc. It is likely to be one of these 'customisations' that is the cause of your problem. If you remove them them add them back one by one, you should discover which one is the problem.

Thanks for all the help guys. I am not sure what the issue was but it was related to Tom Gaines Cinematic Collection Viewer plugin. For the awards. I am unaware of making any changes that might have effected this plugin nor have I made any corrections or changes lately, however when I uninstalled it, everything came up fine without the ctl key. When I have time I will reinstall as I have been using this plugin in the current configuration for months, so it must have been something I inadvertently did that caused it to malfunction.

Thanks again for all the help I really appreciate it.

Hello falcon2099
I have still the problem that dvdprofiler won't start. I did everything u wrote above. Only when I holddown the Ctrl-key it works. I have 2 different pc's one is a P4P800, ht proccessor, 2gig off memory, 2 hdd off 160gig and vista ultimate running. The other is a P5B with core 2 dual, 2gig off memory, 320 hdd and vista ultimate running. On the P4 I got the error and on the P5 it works normal. Strange but true.

try this perhaps it may work, this has not been confirmed as a solution yet. but it won't hurt.
Windows Aero desktop activated?
Disable Windows Aero
If you are not a fan of Windows Aero, or if you are willing to accept less modern look and feel to improve performance of your PC, you can disable Windows Aero altogether:
1.      Right-click on your desktop and click Personalize (or from menu Start run: Control Panel > Personalization)
2.      Click "Theme"
3.      Choose "Windows Classic" and click OK.
Your screen will gray out for several seconds. When it comes back, windows will have the classic look and Vista will be faster!

You can now go back to Vista look and feel without re-enabling Aero:
1.      Right-click on your desktop and click Personalize (or from menu Start run: Control Panel > Personalization)
2.      Click "Window Color and Appearance"
3.      Choose "Windows Vista Basic" from the "Color scheme" list and click OK.
Again, your screen grays out. After a few seconds, you will now have the standard Vista look and feel but without all the dynamic effects of Windows Aero (the Glass effect, Taskbar Thumbnails or the Flip 3D).

To re-enable Windows Aero, choose "Windows Aero" from the "Color scheme" list mentioned above.

So the computer with the problem has this motherboard with the P4P800, do you have more details on the motherboard or you computer if it is a brand computer? if you don't, use this tool to find out:
  • SIW - System Information for Windows

  • at the left hand side select hardware: motherboard

My P4P800 is from Asus and I build the pc from parts by myself.

    choose your motherboard:
    P4P800-E Deluxe
    P4P800 SE
    P4P800-X
check your bios if it is the most recent. for the drivers there seems to be a problem none for vista?
