There is plenty of competition....Sony, LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Pioneer and Denon are all making Blu-ray players (and others, I'm sure). Unless you believe in some kind of a conspiracy theory, over time, prices will be driven down by these competing companies as well as further penetration of the masses. The longer the Blu-Ray technology is out manufacturers will find less expensive ways to produce Blu-Ray players (and discs) as: 1. Internal components become more readily available 2. Since you can get a Blu-ray player right at the $400 price point right now, expect them to be cheaper come November 28th (at least in the USofA). There's no reason to expect price drops until then.

As to the notion of DVD's being "competition", I can see the argument and it has some logic but I don't think it matters to the BD. While DVDs still make up the majority of film purchases I wouldn't exactly consider them competition in the same way HD DVD was compeition. Do luxury car makers adjust their prices because cheap budget cars out sell them? Definitely not. You can still drive from point A to point B whether you purchase the cheap car or the luxury car. And similarly, you can still watch the same movie whether you purchase it on DVD or Blu-ray. Luckly when I bought my (new) dvd player a few years ago it had a setting for 16:9 tvs and progressive scan, but blu would be nice too. | | | We're on a mission from God.

If you are referring to current-released player prices going up, then blame the retailers, since the MSRP has not changed. |
