Hello,

I got another question, haven't found anything about it in the FAQs.

Today I got the new ZerowomanR DVD in.
it is an official Hong Kong release from Hong kong by CN Entertainment Ltd., which you can buy at all stores, f.e. yesasia, DDDHouse, Sensasian, and so on.

When i use the UPC from the backcover, which is: 9200804000136.
it is exactly written as this, no spaces.

DVD Profiler tells me this is an invalid UPC.

My question is, shall I contribute this DVD with this UPC anyways or shall i do it with Disk ID ?

thx for any help,
Donnie

If you are absolutely certain the UPC is correct, just click on continue, it will present you a second time with the same error a bit later, but click continue again, and the DVD will be added with that UPC.

The reason it is invalid is because at 13 digits that makes it either a EAN-13 with the check digit or an EAN-14 without the check digit. The check digit would be the last digit if present

if it is an EAN-14 then the check digit should be 3 where the number you are giving from the back cover has a check digit of 6 if it is an EAN-14 then it should have a check digit of 1 at the end (not sure if DVD Profiler uses\accepts EAN-14)

here is a site that will let you calculate check digits for different types of UPC\EANs (that site also gives some good information on barcodes)

Do you have a barcode scanner that you can scan the barcode with and see what it scans at (if it scans). Or can you get a good rear cover scan that you could post and someone here with a barcode scanner can try and scan it. There was a similar situation that was posted about somewhere in the forum, think it was a while ago and the search feature isn't the best so likely if you search the forums you wouldn't find it (you might if you use google and search the site)

found the thread here (using google site search)

that's the recent one (end of april). there was an older one that that one links to that goes much more in depth, that thread is here

maybe this should get posted in the faq or at least the info put into a sticky thread

Jip, it is.

DiscID, since the online-DB wouldn't accept an invalid upc anyways.

thx again for your quick answers,
I think I will contribute it with the Disk-ID.

Still weird how an official release has an invalid UPC

Except that, if a UPC appears on the back cover a certain way, then that information should be entered into DVD Profiler... exactly as it appears on the cover.

sometime the cover print has the wrong information, contacking the DVD production company or distrubution company can get you the correct EAN, I did it once and did put this in the notes field wich at first contribution.
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

Sadly it's all too common with DVDs from Hong Kong... they seem to make up their own EANs to suit themselves, not sticking to the standard, rather than pay to register a proper one, at times.

This is partly true.  You can add a new profile with invalid UPC/EAN locally by skipping the error message, but it can never be contributed to the online. (a good way to create a custom local profile from an existing online version, BTW.) There's no way to bypass the contribution check tho.
