Blu-ray has outpaced DVD adoption
U.S., Europe sales bolstered by PlayStation 3 console
By Danny King -- Video Business, 6/23/2008

JUNE 23 | The adoption rate of Blu-ray Disc drives has outpaced that of standard-definition DVD players almost a decade ago on both sides of the Atlantic because of gamers buying Sony's PlayStation 3 consoles, which include the high-definition disc drives, according to separate estimates.

As of the end of this year, Blu-ray's third on the market, Western European consumers will have acquired Blu-ray drives at more than six times the rate buyers had bought standard disc players by the end of 1999, U.K.-based Futuresource Consulting said last week. In the U.S., customers are acquiring Blu-ray drives at three times the rate they bought DVD players nine years ago, said Michael Youn, Lionsgate’s VP of strategic planning and business development, at a Las Vegas conference yesterday.

Studios and retailers alike are hoping that a higher consumer penetration of Blu-ray players will help reverse a drop in home entertainment spending last year. U.S. customers spent $23.4 billion buying or renting DVDs in 2007, down from $24.1 billion in 2006, according to trade group the Digital Entertainment Group. Studios such as Lionsgate are forecasting about $1 billion in Blu-ray sales this year.

“Longer term, as player prices continue to fall, title availability grows and awareness increases, Blu-ray Disc players will become the product of choice, given the fact that they also play DVD and CD media,” said Jim Bottoms, managing director of corporate development at Futuresource, which was formerly known as Understanding & Solutions. “There will come a time when the branded suppliers focus on this higher capacity drive, mirroring the trend we saw with DVD players replacing CD decks.”

With videogaming industry revenue booming, PlayStation 3’s inclusion of a Blu-ray player is likely the reason for the faster growth on both continents. Of the 15 million Blu-ray drives owned by U.S. consumers at the end of last year, 4 million were stand-alone set-top boxes, compared with 5 million standard-definition players installed by the end of 1999, said Youn. Western Europeans will have acquired 10.5 billion Blu-ray drives by the end of 2008, compared with 1.58 million standard machines by 1999, said Futuresource, which didn’t break out PlayStation or stand-alone player sales.

Blu-ray’s outpacing of standard DVD growth is expected to continue as manufacturers and retailers drop prices on both stand-alone Blu-ray players and PlayStation 3s.

Wal-Mart’s selling of its cheapest Blu-ray players at about $200 and a wider Blu-ray title inventory will help push U.S. Blu-ray disc sales to $1 billion this year and as high as $10 billion by 2013, said Youn.

In Europe, more than 30 million people will own either a Blu-ray set-top player or PlayStation 3 by the end of 2010, compared with the 17 million standard players owned there in 2001.

“The timing of the PS3 launch has clearly provided a big boost to the initial uptake of Blu-ray,” said Bottoms. “With a number of hot games titles now starting to emerge and console prices continuing to fall, we can expect to see continued strong uptake.”

It seems consumers are happy to buy the PS3, but they're not actually that interested in bluray.
From the NY Times, 30 April '08:
Quote:
Hot on the heels of last week’s report from ABI Research noting that many consumers may not see the picture quality difference between Blu-ray and standard DVDs comes the latest Blu-ray sales figures from NPD Group. And they’re not pretty.
According to NPD, sales of Blu-ray standalone players plummeted 40 percent from January to February, then rose a scant 2 percent from February to March. The general consensus was that once Toshiba dropped its support for the HD DVD format early this year, sales would increase.
In fact, sales of Blu-ray standalone players remain so low that NPD has not yet released actual numbers, for fear that it would be easy to identify individual retailers. The research group will start to give actual figures later this year, said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis at NPD.
The end of the format wars clearly did little to boost Blu-ray’s prospects. Like others, Mr. Rubin said the much cheaper upconverting standard DVD players are winning consumers’ hearts and wallets.

The price of upconverting players is hovering around $70. And this week, Amazon is giving them away for free when consumers purchase certain Samsung TVs. The result: a 5 percent uptick in upconverting DVD player sales in the first quarter of 2008, compared to same quarter a year ago, and a 39 percent decline in players that don’t have that feature.
With Blu-ray players still costing more than $300 — and a number of players on the market still lacking some Blu-ray features like Internet connectivity — NPD now figures that Blu-ray’s future won’t be clear until this Christmas, when prices should drop to the $200 range.
ABI Research is even less optimistic. In a report released yesterday, the research firm figures it could take until October 2009 until Blu-ray gains a foothold in the market.

There's still a whole heckuva lot of people out there confused as to why they should spend more money on a disk with the same movie and less features.  What a surprise.

That doesn't say a thing about the adoption of bluray as a movie format. Most PS3 owners use the thing for gaming only. I suspect that a fair portion of the PS3 owners don't even know that you can watch highdef movies on that machine. And believe it or not, a lot of owners of bluray players don't even know that it's backwards compatible with dvd.

Those numbers seem odd considering the population of all of Europe is estimated to be about 731 million. So, by the numbers estimated in this article, every single Western European (including newborns) will own at least 14 blu ray drives by the end of 2008.

Sounds like a big fish story to me.

Let's see: 4 for each corner in my livingroom and bedroom, 1 for the kitchen, 1 in my shower, 1 in my toilet (actually, I wouldn't mind that  ), 1 in the hall. Oh, and 2 in my computer room ofcourse.

Now where will I set up all the various 7.1 sets? My toilet isn't that big!

Articles like this just give me more reason to substitute the word SONY for the word BullSh*t.

Think of it, you're talking to your buddies at the pub and suddenly the cuss jars stop filling up because all you hear is "You lying sack of Sony!!! What a load of Sony!!!

I'm guessing you're single and live alone. Just think of what you can do with the other 14 when you find your soul mate.

Why do you blame Sony when this was a VP at Lionsgate that had the quotes?

Why do you bother quoting such articles without checking their validity?

The whole article reads like so many I have read which came directly from Sony and Sony is a major participant in BD. Sony has participated in this type of "marketing" since the 70s. Same story, different format, different day.

Maybe the 10.5 billion was a typo and should have read 10.5 million. You'd have to ask the author of said article.

You know, typos do happen, look at your old friend Skip.

Besides, I don't have to only post things that you enjoy reading .. no one forced you to read it.

Hmmmm.... Why have you turned this into a Skip thrashing? He hasn't even replied in this thread. I see no reason for you to get personal. Others posted their opinions here. Don't you think it odd that you didn't attack them? I guess you have some issue with Skip and for whatever reason you associate that with me even though I don't post in this forum but once every few months or so. Hell, nobody attacked you at all.

Back on topic:
The "typo" aside (and I'm not convinced it was a typo), the rest of the article isn't much better and, like I said in my earlier post; it reads just like so many other Sony articles it's difficult to give it any credence whatsoever.

I have no issues with Skip. Skip is a friend. I actually resepct Skip, probably one of the few that actually do around here. It also just happens that he makes a lot of typos, something that he knows he does, so it made it easy to use him as an example of how typos canand do happen.

Why did I get on you? You're the one that blew the text up to absurd prportions to make a point. A point that you blamed on Sony. A point that you bashed Sony for, when they infact had nothing at all to do with any of the quotes in the article.

Then, you jumped on me for posting the article. Do you have a problem with me and what I post? It sures does seem like it.

No Issue with you at all, just this idiotic article.

I didn't "jump" on you. I simply replied to your hostility. If you don't want it returned, you shouldn't toss it about.

After reading the critics in this thread (I'm sure you noticed I wasn't the only one), you have to agree that this article, and it's author(s) (whoever they may be) is less than credible.

edit: in the interest of keeping the peace around here and if it will make you feel better; I will reduce the size of the font. 30 was the first number that came to mind when I did that. What size would you like? I still want it larger than the rest so it stands out prominently, though.
