My xbox had the RROD the other day.... and though I got it working again (because like anyone who is a hitch-hiker, I know where my towel is).... it got me thinking

Should I see this as the time to move to a PS3?

Mainly because of a) BluRay and b) hopefully media streaming from pc (games... are a bonus)

Can you give me reasons why I should go for the PS3

Or xbox users... reasons I should get the 360 Elite?

Thank You
Signature? We don't need no stinking... hang on, this has been done... blast [oooh now in Widescreen]
Ah... well you see.... I thought I'd say something more interesting... but cannot think of anything..... oh well

Reasons to buy a PS3....

1) Blu-ray movie playback.
2) Hey, it also plays games.
3) It streams media from your PC without any additional software if you have WMP installed (Images, videos, music)
4) You can surf the web and play youtube videos, if that's your thing.
5) Online gaming is 100% free, just added the Trophy system, although the f/w wwas temp. pulled.
6) Exclusives include: Resistance 1 & 2, MGS4, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword among others, inclusing but not limited to a new franchise that Rockstar is going to launch late this year early 2009. (Details are top secret, Sony is not even allowed to talk about it)
7) Every system has a HDD, so developers can use that to help with load times and what not.
8) WiFi out of the box, don't need wires running around the room.
9) Will one day see an update to make it a DVR like they did in Europe).. Oh, wait, you're in Europe
10) You can replace the HDD with any laptop HD without voiding the warantee.

I'll let others add and subtract.

Come on, if you're going to link to something, link a credible article. That doesn't sound half true.

My PS3 doesn't heat up and it's pretty enclosed.

One of the comments to the article...

and the PS3 with the doors open? You got it backwards man. The PS3 can never overheat. It shuts itself off when the temp gets to a hot enough level. It's in the manual!

The important sentence was:

You don’t have to browse many message boards to figure out that die-hard fans of either the Xbox 360 or the PS3 don’t really get along with those that use the other system.

I think you've just proven it to be correct

BTW: I'm planning to buy a PS3 myself, XBOX was never an option.
One of the most important reasons for me was that the PS3 gets it's firmware updated with new developments so that you're not suddenly sitting next to $ 400,- of electronic junk
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

If I was going to buy a Blu-ray player today, I'd still get a PS3.  The easier question to answer is why NOT get a PS3.  I don't recall all the reasons, but there are a couple valid ones.

It doesn't have the 6 channel analog outs that some other players have.  If you're receiver doesn't have HDMI and you use those analog out jacks to get advanced sound to your system, the PS3 isn't right for you.

The PS3 uses bluetooth rather than IR.  So if you have a universal remote and want to use it, you can't program in the PS3 remote to your universal remote.  There are other options to work around this and some of them are now very nice.  But you're going to spend another $50-$100 (roughly) to get one of these.

Funky,
it all depends on what you want it for.
If you want to go HD and are looking for a blu-ray, it's certainly the best on the market.
If gaming is your primary concern, you may look into replacing your Xbox if you already have a collection of games you enjoy or have a group of xbox friends you play online with.
Each console has it's own strengths so it all depends on what you're looking for as to which one you go for.
PS did you know MS will fix your Xbox for free if it's less than 3 years old?

Edit: the biggest drawback for the PS3 for me has been the price so far. Even if you go down that route, you may still be better off to see what they do to attract the xmas market at the end of the year.

Guilty conscience much?
He called you a "die-hard fan" of the PS3, not a Sony fanboy. And he doesn't have to be psychic to say that as you've already stated you own one.

Are you not within the extended three year warranty that applies to the RROD problem?

All they do is replace the motherboard, but it means you get to wait on price reductions for the 360 Elite

Except for PS2 games if you're in Europe and buy the current model. Generally I'd be loath to recommend it based purely on the games out so far as there isn't strong PS3 catalogue yet. However Drakes Fortune is a very good game and I am enjoying MGS4, even though I've never played the previous games. Depends if a few strong games are enough to tempt you.

Being in a position to compare the two my standalone DVD player does a far better job than my PS3 on upscaling. Both are connected via HDMI, it's also not region free, which is a consideration for many UK users.
