LOS ANGELES, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) held its annual press conference today at the E3 Media & Business Summit, making a series of announcements which demonstrated the strength of the PlayStation brand across all three of its platforms and further leveraged the heritage and momentum of PlayStation's family of products to provide consumers with more compelling entertainment options than anyone in the videogame industry.

"Starting in September 2008, the newly announced PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) 80GB model will become the mainstay of the company's hardware line-up. I find this story kinda funny because here in New York, Sony release the 80GB backwards compatible at the end of June 08 for $499.

The 40GB is not backwards compatible for $399.

The 40GB doesn't have media card readers, SACD capabilities, or 2 extra USB ports either.  I do believe they will have a PS2 software emulator (not partial like in the current 80GB...60GB in Europe) at a later point in time just like PS1 emulation in the 40GB PS3.
