I spent last night in a tangle of speaker wire.  I have a PS3 and recently bought a Sony DG820 reciever.  The receiver can decode all sort of stuff (DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD, for example) and even tell you what it's decoding.  So when I watch Semi-Pro, I expected the little DTS-HD light to show.

But that never happened, I have all the settings correct, and I'm going through HDMI and all that fun stuff.  My PS3 said for those audio formats, I have to have the setting at Linear PCM.  The PS3 is software version 2.41

So, my question is, does the PS3 decode the nice audio formats and then send them LPCM?  (I guess this means that I've never see the little DTS-HD light on the receiver.  To get those lights, the receiver has to do the decoding through a bitstream signal., right?)

Since the PS3 outputs the Sound in PCM you will never see any logo's on your receiver. In order for that to work you would need a Blu Ray Player that can output the Sound in Bitstream over HDMI. Which is physically impossible for the PS3 because it misses a chip that would be required. Still, the sound quality is the same. (I heard).. It supposedly doesn't matter if the receiver does the decoding or the Player. Your settings are all right btw. So you are actually hearing HD Sound. The Receiver just will not display any logo's. (That was actually the reason why I bought a stand alone player and no the PS3.. ) I wanted the logo's..

They are correct.  The only difference will be in volume.  Bitstreamed audio will sound louder in most cases over internal decoding.  The audio detail will be identical (bit for bit identical).  Just adjust the volume to your taste.

Also, with internal decoding on the PS3, any A/V receiver with HDMI 1.1 or higher should allow you to enjoy lossless audio from BD titles.

OK, thanks for the confirmation.

But, man, that's weird.  I gotta think it's way more efficient for a machine to let something else (like a receiver) do the processing.  Don't understand why the PS3 doesn't just pass the signal on.   

Oh well ... still rather enjoyed Cars on Blu-Ray last night.

Well, it's just not equipped to put the sound out via bitstream. Back when the PS3 was conceived there were no players that could output it via bitstream.. sorry..
