| | Posted: | | | | I am trying to find out the best way to get the most out of what I have for now. I have a 50" Plasma Tv, a Panasonic Blu-Ray player, a PS3 and a Sony receive bought back in 2001. My Blu-Ray and PS3 are hook up to the Tv through HDMI and the receiver is hook up to the Tv through optical cable. My receiver does not decode TruHD sound and the Panasonic does not either. I plan to in the future by a better receiver to decode the sound but for now should I use the PS3 to play Blu-Ray movies or the Panasonic? Will the PS3 decode the TruHD sound so I can here it through my Sony Receiver or am I out of luck because my receiver is too old? | | | | Last edited: by Dragon 6 |

| | Posted: | | | | I imagine with a receiver of that vintage (i have a Sony receiver about the same age) you'll get Dolby 5.1 or whatever your best Dolby Digital option is. All the newer modes are backwards compatible.
That said most every HD-DVD and BD disc i've played sounds notably better than DVD. I think all those extra incoming data bits have an impact. The sound is bigger and more full.
(And if the receiver does DTS i always chose that option when the disc offers it. It generally sounds even better.) | | | | Bad movie? You're soaking in it! |

The best you can probably get will be DD 5.1. Upgrade!!! I don't know of any Tvs that have an optical input, Usually HDMI / RCA / SVHS / and Component .. Your Bluplayer should be hooked up as you say by HDMI, and the audio via optical to your receiver. Your receiver may be old and not be able to read the new Truehd sound and if that is the case you should still be able to enjoy 5.1 DD and DTS sound thru optical. If your receiver can't get optical as well as True I'd say yes your away overdue for a new receiver. My 4 year old JVC can't get the TruHD audio from my A3 but I am able to use optical audio to the JVC and the HDMI/component to my 46" Sony Wega ....  | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. I will hook up the optical to my Panasonic player to my receiver for movies and for my Tv watching I guess I will hook up my receiver through A/V cables for sound. |
