There are at least two Ian Roberts in the database.

Having the same BY, the difference is one born 7/29 the other 7/31. Unbelievable!

How do you distingish between the two?

With the function and the rules we have now... it just not possible.

I knew it would only be a matter of time since we would see an example like this.

I think it's time to include the complete birth date (when known)

Here is another example of an actress that I wanted to add, but I can't since they both share the same BY.

Julie Payne (1940) 9/11
NYPD Blue
American Wedding
Lois & Clark
Spy Hard
The Brady Bunch Movie
Full House
Perfect Strangers
Misery
Who’s the Boss
Murphy Brown
Rain Man
Jumpin’ Jack Flash
Fraternity Vacation
ER
Family Ties
Laverne & Shirley
Taxi
THX-1138
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0668372/

Julie Payne (1940) (7/10)
The Wild Wild West
The Manchurian Candidate
Alfred Hitchcock Presents
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1447580/

I haven't had the time to look up other websites to verify the birth dates for either of them past IMDB yet.

Fake (thus: non-contributable) birth years are the only option here. I take quite a bit of pride in the "quality" of my cast and crew data, and I can tell you that I literally have about 100-150 fake birth years in my database - each and everyone of them absolutely essential to keep the credits of entirely different people from linking together.

Or you could leave the birth year empty in one.  There's no rule that says both actors need to have the BY value populated.

I just recently submitted the BY 1965 for the Ian Roberts (1965/7/29).
He has way more appearances than Ian Robert (1965/7/31) and he is two days older, it's his damn right to be stored with his BY in the Invelos database

And like others already suggested, just leave the BY blank for the other one.

BTW and FYI, there's another Ian Roberts (1952) with accepted BY in the database...

There's no rule, but instead the way the program works simply forces this upon us: never ever leave one birth year empty. Why? Because of the moment that you are, for whatever reason (if not a major crash, then maybe the move to a new computer) forced to restore from a backup. That process doesn't deal at all well with this: it automatically merges the entry with a birth year and the entry without a birth year into one singleentry, with the birth year, automatically eliminating the hard work you've done to separate the two. I've been burned by this once very early on, and I'm making sure this never happens again. As I said, I've got about 100-150 examples of this in my database: if they all get erased the minute I move my database to a different system, then countless hours of research to split these credits up has gone up in smoke. If you don't want that horror-scenario to happen, then never ever leave one birth year empty - always add a fake one.

Good point there, Tim!

Another possibility to preserve entries w/o BY would be to add a headshot (inside the program, not in the CreditPhotos folder) – assuming that you keep all cast/crew, i.e. not delete unused ones with the database repair utility.

Just tested this by restoring my latest headshot backup file (which contains headshots for all three Ian Roberts') to a new database. That should also work for a complete database backup – or am I wrong here?

Could be: I haven't tested that yet. I do have the habit of regularly cleaning up any unused cast/crew entries with the database repair utility, though.
