Many international releases share the same disc and experience learns that many, many discrepancies remain (incomplete fields, i.e. Audio, Subtitles, ...). It also means that every localization of a release (with an identical Disc ID's) sees efforts multiplied and even lost, in combining profiles for the correct fields. Some of them even remain almost empty.

I would suggest that these profiles that share identical Disc's ID's are merged and kept 'linked' on the server side, for fields that would not change, like Production Year, CoO, Runtime, Video Format, Studios, Features, Audio, Subtitles, Cast, Crew and DISC ID's. Is it possible, and how?

I don't wish to give any priority to this feature request/proposal, I just believe this is a constructive proposal that would only benefit the community in helping keeping DVD Profiler correct and fun.

Yes, those parts could (and perhaps should) be handled on disc level, including voting on changes.

I think the most complicated process at this late stage would be the actual merging of the data. How do we decide which version is most correct to use as the base profile?

And still many profiles even lack disc IDs since it's not a required entry.

??
I know this can happen with UPC/EAN but always thought that the DiscID is unique.
Do you have any examples?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

So it gets bashed because you think Disc ID's are not unique? But they are!

Here's a problem I can see with the current rules:

The Matrix Blu-ray US profile: disc ID: 6EDEA3D3A4541617 [THE_MATRIX]
The Matrix Blu-ray Japan profile: disc ID: 6EDEA3D3A4541617 [THE_MATRIX]

When played on a player set to Japanese as prefered language, the menu changes to Japanese and Japanese audio and subs are selectable.
When played on a player set to any other language as prefered language, Japanese audio and subs are not selectable. (except for region-free players with the audio/sub button.

Ken explicitely stated that we cannot enter the Japanese audio & subs in the US profile, but of course can do so in the Japanese profile. In the Japanese profile, some other western languages are not selectable (again, unless you have a region free player) so they can't be shown on that one.

So here we have two identical discs, with identical disc ID's but with different menus and audio/subs options depending on the player. Ken wants us to treat those differently. With that in mind, I think your suggestion would go against the rules.

As a side note, I think your idea is a good one and I would personnally prefer to track all tracks encoded on a disc, but Ken seems to be against it.

I see that caveat But fortunately exceptions can be built in.

Actually not true... I have a few different boxsets... mostly older and/or cheaper sets where 2 or more of the of the child profiles use the same disc ID. Because of this I haven't been able to contribute child profiles for these.... instead having to opt for manual profiles. Granted I haven't seen this lately but they are out there. And if they are out there within a boxset I can't believe they are not out there between separate releases... especially among the dollar dvds that are sold around here (and there is a ton of those!).

Are you talking about the "old" disc id or the longer "new" disc id? The new disc id is a hash over many features of a disc and can't be chosen by the producer of the DVD. While it is theoretically possible that two different discs have the same disc id, the chance is very low and I haven't seen a confirmed example yet. It would be even more improbable if such two discs would be in the same box by any chance.

I will have to find the sets and check to be 100% sure... but I thought I already updated all my old disc IDs to the new ones long time ago.

I don't know in which way the Disc Id in DVDP profiler is build, but I can think of two ways.

Some kind of serial number.
Or a number based on the content. (Some checksum or anything like this)

In both ways I can imagine it is not really unique.

But as it is not often I have to add over Disc Id and I'm also not tracking them for comprehansion, I can't say for sure.
