Should the words "A Widescreen Presentation" (when they're on the cover, of course) be put into the "Edition" field?

For the record: I don't think so, and I certainly won't do so in my local database - it's just that there's a contribution up for voting that adds "A Widescreen Presentation" to the "Edition" field, and I was wondering how I should vote...

Whilst still technically true, I would liken it to a collection name. I have a number of AWP titles, and it is a good way to identify them, just like Criterion Collection.

I think I'd need to see a cover before I could say for sure. If it was in a banner at the top or something similar I could see their point.

Is there another release for the same film? For instance a Pan & Scan release.

The rules specifically mention 'Widescreen' so, while I don't like it and don't use it in my local, I don't see why "A Widescreen Presentation" wouldn't be allowed.

It wasn't until after voting that I (believe I) realize how the question was meant to be presented.

I'm at a stalemate right now.

On one hand, I would say it's valid for Edition based on the nature of the material. Regular "Widescreen" goes into the edition field, and this just sounds like a variation of that.  On the other hand, something like a "A Ridley Scott Production" would not be put into Edition I don't believe. It's all a matter of context.

I don;t remember ever seeing one of these before... but based on the covers provided above... I agree.

While I don't like it, I don't think I could vote against it per the rules.

The Edition field is for distinguishing between DVDs, and for indicating special versions and collections (for example The Criterion Collection, Widescreen, Full-Screen Edition, Director's Cut). It's usually safe to use one of the built-in selections if appropriate. If you are using a non-standard description, take it from the DVD box, and ensure it will help distinguish between different releases of the same title.

So I guess the question is, is there another edition in the datbase? Such as a "A Full Screen Presentation"?

If so, then as far as I understand the rules, that helps to distinguish the "A Widescreen Presntation" from the "A Full Screen Presentation" and thus I would say yes.

If not, then I would likely say no, since it wouldn't be distinguishing this DVD from another in the database.

IMO of course.

Based on those covers I wouldn't do it myself, but see no reason to vote "no" to anyone wanting to add them.

This is a popular misconception about the edition field.  While "distinguishing between DVDs" is one purpose of the field, it isn't the only purpose.  The other purpose to "indicating special versions and collections."

It could be argued that, 'A Widescreen Presentation', is Columbia's version of the 'Widescreen Collection'...which is what Paramount uses.  While I wouldn't use it, I see no reason to keep it out of the main database.

If you're asking for my opinion, then in that case: No.

But I don't think it's against the rules, unfortunately.

Nowadays Widescreen is the norm, rather than the exception, and we also have the video format field. So I find this a useless addition (but would not vote against it according to the Rules).

Maybe it's time to use the edition field for "Full Screen" (or "B/W"), and of course whenever there is an actual need to distinguish between editions.
