Television really shouldn't be in the genre field. It isn't a genre and takes up valuable space. I'd like to see a new source field added where you can mark a title as being a theatrical release, from television, the Internet or direct-to-video. I think that would cover all possibilities. (You may also want a none option for box sets.)

But then someone will need Live on Tape because someone will argue "it was filmed lived but shown later, so it wasn't really Live!"
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

All we need to say is it is how it was originally... just like we do for all other fields (original release)

I wonder then if you would allow multiple choices, like Duel was both television and theatrical release.

Were they released both on TV and Theatrically on the same day? if not then you would go with how it was originally released. At least that is how I would see it working. If not you can have multiple for pretty much every movie eventually... as the movies come to Pay-Per-View and Cable TV.

We had a thread like this before in Feature Requests, but I can't remember the title.  I still agree with it.  Add the important categories like Feature Films, Television, Shorts, Music Videos, Live Performance (for sports and concerts), and Special Features (for bonus discs and the like that only carry extras).  You could break up Feature Film into categories, like TV Movie, Theatrical Release, and Direct-to-Video, but that could open up several cans of worms.

To me TV movies would go under Television since that is where it originally aired.

I personally would have it...

Theatrical Releases, Direct-to-Video, Television, Shorts, Music Videos, Live Performance (for sports and concerts), and Special Features.

I don't think this is needed. live performances were still being shown on TV, the Internet, theaters or direct-to-video as movies. This could add confusion.

Shorts would be either Theatrical, DtoV or TV, wouldn't they?  I don't see an advantage to a separate category.  And then there would be arguments about what's a short vs. long form:  8 minutes?  2 reels?  3 reels?

The only reason I added shorts is because someone else requested it. Don't matter to me either way on that one.

Shorts would cover any kind of collection of short films (such as the Walt Disney Treasures or Looney Tunes Golden Collections, for example, or the defunct Short series).  It does matter, because I personally have collections of shorts that are mixed between shorts that were in theaters, debuted on television, and were direct to video (especially in collections where the work is of a single filmmmaker).

You could make it a checkbox situation, allowing multiple choices, but I do think Short is an important source on its own.

I agree that shorts are important, but they are not a source unto themselves as they will fit into the other categories.  Short is no more a source than Documentary, for example.
