Maybe it's time to discuss, as profilers, what and how to track crew members.

There are always a number of suggestions about additions and divisions request for crew people.  There are some that would like to track less, then there are some that would like to track more.

I am personally of the mindset to track more, as long as there is proper categories and designations.  I do not want to add more crew, just to get lost in the divisions we already have.

I would like to divide up the crew into Production and Post production.  This will help most in the Art Department, but will divide up some of the sound crew as well.

The Production side, i would like to include

Production Supervisor

Production Sound Mixer

Stunts
Special Effects
Makeup
Scenic Artists
Greensperson
Set Designer
Costumes

In the post production Side

Post Production Supervisor

Rerecording Mixer
Dialog Mixer
Foley Mixer
etc

Visual and Digital Effects Companies.

There are others of course.

This would all be contingent on proper base labels and or contributable custom credits.

There would of course be a few questions

Where would Director and Production Designer fit.  They are both involved in Production and post Production.  Then where to put Producers.

I know some people will disagree, and maybe I am in left field.  That is why I said discuss....

Maybe if we come up with what and how, it would give Ken an idea of what direction we would like to go...

As anybody can do what he wants in his local, I think that sound and art sections should be removed from contribution. Contributors spend time to enter them, profiles downloaders spend time to delete them.

We have now so many names without any documentation that linking of all those is impossible with dvdprofiler common name system.

You speak for yourself perhaps, but I certainly track art and sound crew and find them personally useful. I highly doubt that the majority of users here simply delete them after downloading.

The solution is to implement open crew credits with the ability to select each group and/or entry for upload/download.

That way everyone gets exactly what they want and people can contribute only what they wish and feel comfortable with.

And what about the linking of the 66 John Moore that are credited somewhere, most of them with BY impossible to find. With present common name system we link together totally different people, and data becomes meaningless.

Have to agree with Hal on this one.

The linking is a separate problem that needs to be dealt with on another level.

I agree with Hal, that a form of open credits is Ideal, but should be put into distinct categories.

Not everyone here shares your opinion of what is or what isn't meaningless data. The system is not perfect and never will be, but it works for the most part, and users can always customize the program to fit their needs.

If open credits will solve some of these problems, then let them come.

Rather than trying to expand on the crippled system we have, I believe this is the only effective way forward as well. I'm not saying I want it, but if the alternative is more labels and categories, and yet more extensive rules, I'm for it. But I would prefer status quo. We already track enough information and in some cases too much information. But that's just my opinion and I don't mind if other people want to track more information, I just want to keep submissions relatively simple for those who don't.

And we'll soon have the 300+ ILM babies that are credited in WALL.E in the database. Well, in this case, at least we have their BY....

I could get behind that.

I  agree that a "real" fix for the currently abysmal "Common Name" linking system would have to be implemented before we could ever go to an open credit system.

I don't see why this would be an issue, except possibly for Ken.  What difference does it make how bloated the on-line database becomes as long as what you download locally is 100% selectable?

I can agree with that. But I would prefer contributors spend their time to enter correctly names of main actors rather than filling listings of unknown people.

Because I don't want to look through hundreds of entries just to find the few I am interested in.
For me open credits would mean no more credit downloads from the online database anymore, so my vote would be against it.

By selectable, I mean you can "universally" set what groups/entries you want to download under "Tools>Options" and the program will only download those groups/entries.  You won't have to manually check every profile and tick the boxes for those you want, unless that's the way you choose to do it.
