I'm looking for opinions as to how to handle a television cast credit.

As you know, the main cast are often credited in every episode of a TV series, even when they don't actually appear in some episodes.  Let's say that such an actor is always credited but the role is not specified in the credits.  In this case we will find the role name from another source and enter it in Profiler.

My question is, would you still enter such an actor's role for an episode in which the actor is credited but does not appear?  On the one hand I say yes, because we know the role this actor plays, but on the other hand this character was not present in the episode.

How do others handle such a situation?

Smallville, Babylon 5 & Buffy all seem to list everyone credited whether they appear outside the credits or not. Personally, I would have gone the other way.

As the character name usually stays the same through a season, I enter that role name.  I don't really see any reason to leave it out.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

My reasoning would be that the role doesn't appear in the credits and the character doesn't appear in the episode.  But I'm still undecided on whether or not I think the role should be left blank because of this.

I say credit them.

The credit itself is what we're after. Even though it's not perfect.

Who knows, this may not be something that only affects TV Series. There could be cases where an actor is credited a film's credits, but their scenes were deleted, but we credit them anyways since that's what the credits list.

This could easily be solved if a "Doesn't appear" or other similar term could be added to the cast section along with voice and uncredited. Thus when checked people who would know that particular actor didn't actually appear in the episode.

I definately wouldn't mind seeing that as an option, and think it would be a satisfactory way to handle such a situation.  In the meantime, it looks like I should just keep notes and include the roles if I plan on contributing.

I suppose a "Doesn't appear" feature request has already been submitted?

I don't understand why one would include someone that is not on screen. If they are not in the episode, they should not be credited.

Edit: The only way I would include them is if they are listed in the episode credits.

And that's what we're talking about here: people who do appear in the credits, but who do not appear in the actual episode.
