I got Sucker Punch today and inside, the discs go like this:

Disc 1: PG-13 Theatrical Version Blu-ray
Disc 2: R-rated Extended Cut Blu-ray
Disc 3: PG-13 Theatrical Version DVD/Digital Copy Combo Disc

Disc 3 is obvious but how to do the others? The only comparison was Terminator Salvation. Would I make the main (parent) profile the Extended Cut (since the main artwork states as such) and then make the Theatrical Version disc as the child profile?

The disc themselves are not labeled as Disc 1, 2 or 3 (what I listed above is the order it was inside the case).

I know this will result in a long debate about profiling these like Box Sets (which I'm leaning towards now), but until the rules change, what to do in this case?

Any ideas? I'm leaning towards making the main profile the Extended Cut since that's what the cover art says (and apparently go by the highest rating anyway) and making the PG-13 version the child profile (along with the DVD copy which also will be a child profile).

Am I incorrect in this?

I always profile based on the front cover so, if the extended cut is what is listed, then that would be the main profile for me.

As an aside, how did you get this a week early?
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Because I'm awesome!

Ok, it's because Warner sent me a copy to review (see sig for my site).

For DVDs with more than one rating shown (e.g. a DVD which includes an R and Unrated version), use the highest applicable rating with the following scale:

NR < Board Rating < Unrated < Adult.

That's the only thing that I found in the rules regarding a situation close to this.

Since this is all one film I would use the highest rating that the film received.

And then there this for running time in the rules.

Quote:
For branching titles, or those with multiple versions (e.g. Theatrical and Director's Cut) on the same disc, use the longest running time.

So I always thought that if a DVD or DVD set contains one movie that we use the longest running time and thus the rating that applies to the longer running version.

In this case, the Sucker Punch Extended Cut is rated R and is 18-minutes longer than the theatrical version.

I Am Legend is another example. I go with disc 1 is the main feature and anything after that is a bonus.

No; not incorrect.  That's how I think it should be done as well.

Yeah, I know, but it is a hobby site although I do have links to Amazon.com to make some to cover the site costs.

Not releated to the OP but I just roll my eyes at the studios when they do this. Why not use the features of the format and use seamless branching?

But since this is one film, I would still treat it as if it was two versions on the same disc. Not a box set, not a bonus profile, just profile the longest cut.

wouldn't extended  mean deleted scenes ?  I don't have the information at my fingertips right now.. but did the Director rededit the extra scenes into the movie for this dvd release ?  or are the scenes branched (branching) into the regular version?

But apart from  all of this we ususally go by what the cover art title says rather than the screen caps ..
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

Well, in this case, I know the studio had Snyder cut out the musical sequences and this "Extended Cut" was submitted to the MPAA and got an R rating.

As for why seamless branching wasn't used, Warner has Maximum Movie Mode which in itself is like seamless branching but with MMM, it stops the movie for video commentary with the filmmaker or with PIP of storyboards, etc. So with that, I don't think seamless branching was a possibility (especially since MMM is for the Extended Cut).

And that was the same reason why seamless branching might not have been used for Terminator Salvation.

I agree with the others in that the extended cut should be the main.  Both the run time & ratings rules back that up, IMO...using the longest run time & highest rating both apply to the extended cut.

I'm jealous you have it already (again), I loved this film and can't wait to see the extended cut!  I've held off on pre-ordering it to see the best price I can get it at.  I usually make my decision after seeing what Target's price is (their ads arrive in store the Tuesday before the sale week, and since I work there I also get a discount), but unfortunately Sucker Punch is not listed in Target's flyer next week so it looks like I'll have to take a guess as to it's price.
