So I have "Mother" (UPC: 097363324744) and the two English Audio choices go like this:

English 5.1 Surround (menu label)

When selected, VLC shows:

A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52)
English
Channels 3F2R/LFE
48000 Hz
448 kb/s bitrate

PowerDVD shows:

Audio Attributes:
  Audio Coding mode: Dolby Digital
  Sampling Rate: 48kHz
  Audio application mode: Not specified
  Number of Audio channels: 6
  Bitrate: 448 Kbps

-----

The next label is for: English Dolby Surround

VLC:
English Dolby Surround
A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52)
English
Channels: Dolby
48000 Hz
192 kb/s

Audio Coding mode: Dolby Digital
  Sampling Rate: 48kHz
  Audio application mode: Surround
  Number of Audio channels: 2
  Bitrate: 192 Kbps

----

The present profile says:

English      Dolby Digital        5.1
English      Dolby Digital        2-Channel Stereo

"Dolby Surround" is not mentioned in the right column for any audio track.

What should the profile say?

Is there a definitive thread for deciding, once you have Dolby Digital, whether you have:

Mono
2-Channel Stereo
Dolby Surround
3.1
4.0
4.1
5.0
5.1

Since our database places a very high regard on accuracy, I'd love to know how to be accurate here.

Can I use the info from this link to help sort things out?

Just from the label it should be:

1. English  Dolby Digital  5.1
2. English  Dolby Digital  Dolby Surround

I don't seen anything in all the other software checks to seriously suggest otherwise, and why make life complicated? These are just the labels we use, a limited number for potentially an even larger variety of sound channels.

Both tools are showing the same audio types as the DVD label.

For the first track: "English 5.1 Surround". VLC shows six channels "3F2R/LFE"; 3 front 2 rear makes the "5" and LFE is the ".1". PowerDVD shows 6 channels and lists them as "Dolby Digital". All three of these are the same.

For the second track: "English Dolby Surround". VLC shows "English Dolby Surround" and PowerDVD shows 2 channel Surround. This track is the old "ProLogic" format where four channels, left, center, right and rear are encoded into two channels.
