I'm redoing The midnight Horror Collection: Zombies (10 movies on 2 disks), but DVD Profiler won't read the disk ID on the second disk. Disk is in good shape and unscratched, so not sure what the problem is. In any case, I can't create alternate versions...what next? Manual alternate? Are there guidelines for this? Can't contribute this though right? What if I attach all 10 to the first disk ID so at least they're all there and can be contributed. Would this be acceptable? Better than the existing contribution of all individual UPCs as a box set.

For creating the alternates...is it acceptable to add existing movies to your DB, then change the UPC to an alternate disk ID, then edit it as required. It's a lot less work to get the cast/crew details this way...and it's nice to have a full cover scan this way too. The question is, will this bugger up the original record?  For instance, say I add an entry to my DB for Night of the Living Dead and it has a UPC of whatever, and I change UPC/ID and create a new alternate version using a disk ID. This won't affect the original entry and UPC on the on-line database, correct?

without the disc ids, you are at a standstill of uploading a contribution.

Sometimes Profiler doesn't recognize the change of the disc if you use the hardware buttons. Did you try the "Eject" button in the 'Add / By DiscID' window?

Yes, No, Yes
As you can't contribute them you can pretty much do what you want.

Although I would also prefer this little subterfuge to the current state, it does collide with the Contribution Rules.

Yes, it is, we call it "profile cloning"

That on the other hand would be uncontributable, according to the rules the covers have to come from the actual set, so Box and the 10 child-profiles ought to have the same one.
What you do locally is your decision of course.

Nope. Every profile has a unique ID, as soon as you change that it is simply a new profile.

Ya, I tried ejecting it, both with the hardware button and a button in one of the DVD Profiler windows, rubbing it on my pants, etc. It's in perfect shape, but sometimes, at least with fussy console video games, rubbing them seems to help. It just sits there spinning with the light blinking. Maybe I'll just let it sit there tonight and see if it'll come up after some time. I also have a second DVD-ROM in the machine, not hooked up at the moment. It's a little flakey and won't burn a disk without corrupting it, but maybe I'll plug it in and see if it'll pull the ID with that one.

As for the cover scans, if I can get the disk ID pulled I'll redo them, otherwise I'll just leave them as-is since I can't contribute them anyway. For the time being, rather than all individual UPCs (Like they existing in the database now) I opted to change the 5 on the second disk all to the same disk ID as the first, just for consistency, but I'll not contribute it like this.

There's a whole pile of these combo sets in my collection that I'd ultimately like to get cleaned up, so I'm trying to get all the rules straight. I find it more time effective to ask pointed question, rather than trolling a bunch of documentation. :D

Thanks for the great reply.

The other DVD-ROM worked for the ID.  All good and contributed.

Often the drives are not defective but calibrated differently. This means, you should not change the drive when it can't read a small bunch of discs, but use a second drive in parallel instead. I've often seen discs to fail in drive A work in drive B and vice versa...
